Does your family eat dinner “family style”? Have I been doing it wrong?

Have you ever noticed on moves and tv (especially for Thanksgiving dinners), the family brings plates and bowls of food to the table, sits down, and passes the bowls around so they can fix their plates sitting at the table? This is known as family style. And I’m starting to wonder if I’ve been doing dinner wrong my whole life. Because I’ve never done that, we fix our own plates off the counter and bring the plates to the table and sit down. I have never family-styled.

A little bit of both. We put the food on the table in the formal dining room when we have guests over. We usually buffet style it when it's just us and eating at the breakfast table.

Family style growing up. I’m dish and sit now, noticed the same of my parents. Unless you have a few kids, I don’t see the sense in dirtying additional serving dishes for the table.

My family did this growing up. When I’m home now it’s the same as your experience unless it’s a holiday.

Sometimes, but right now with little kids we serve them a plate and eat together.

My wife’s family is usually half and half, my family is usually buffet style. If it’s just my wife and I, it’s buffet style.

My dads side of the family only has like 10 people total so we’re able to do family style

Growing up we ate a lot of fast food or easy quick food like spaghetti, we'd just fix our own bowl or plate and go sit in the living room. Big events like Thanksgiving were a little more formal but generally food was left in pots and pans and every fixed their own plate.
My little family sits at the table for meals. Whoever cooks usually plates the food for everyone then we bring the plates out to the table and we eat. For Thanksgiving/Christmas we will have some stuff on the table like wine, gravy, rolls but otherwise good stays in the kitchen.
If we had serving bowls/plates at the table I'd be overeating at every meal. Screw that.

Only 3 of us...and I just cannot eat at 6pm. Sometimes I didn’t eat lunch till 2/3pm.
It’s one of our greatest failures as parents...but I read an article once about this very subject that gave me peace that I wasn’t totally fricking up my kid.
We do dine out together frequently and eat holiday meals together..but day in day out. Nope.
