Does USAA have better insurance rates and service, generally speaking?

My grandfather and my wife's father were military, but I've never tapped into this. Is it worth it? We have never had a home claim and the rates seem ok and we've been fine with 1 claim with Progressive on auto insurance.

Just curious if it's believed USAA has better rates, generally speaking or most of the time, AND if their service is strong?

We have 15+ years of strong driving records for both my wife and I, if that matters.

No. Maybe in the past but not anymore. I was 100% on the USAA train but have divested from them almost completely. I still have my checking and savings accounts, but their home insurance rates and vehicle financing rates are terrible.

They have good customer service but that's about it. They are surviving now off of their reputation of the past. That probably won't last much longer.

I had them for home & auto about 10 years ago. The prices were great for about 5 years then the rates went nuts, all with no claims. I have heard their service is above average, but I never made a claim.

I was able to find cheaper home & auto through a local agent. I haven't price checked them lately.

We have had USAA through my wife’s family for going in 30 years and I can’t say enough good things about the way they do business. Seamless interactions, availability when needed, professional and courteous. They are a class act.

Could I pay a little less somewhere….maybe. But to have the piece of mind to not worry about anything is worth what they charge.

rates, not currently

service, pretty much like any insurance company. You'll have horror stories and good store, luck of the draw really

although I suppose they may be more polite and respectful in general when burying it in you

My auto rates are good because I've been with them so long and I end up getting about a 1/4 of a year's credit back at the end of most years. I do have their homeowner's insurance which I have not been as happy with. Auto customer service is top shelf.

I could be lured away, particularly on homeowners. I can't speak to their banking services but 2 of my children use them.

Their financing and life insurance rates are not competitive/a non-starter.

I have home and auto with them and I will likely never have anything else.

I had all of my insurance through them. A local agent friend of mine with another major company offered to see if he could beat USAA's rates.

He did. By quite a bit.

Usaa has excellent service. It's a fantastic bank, and the only one I'll use. But insurance is pricey.

I switched to them after Laura and Delta when State Farm left me with 1/3 of a roof and then increased my annual premium by 150%. I heard lots of wonderful things about their claims process and went. I haven't made a claim since my switch.

We're maybe 7 years in with USAA, banking and all of our policies (home, auto, excess, etc.)

I enjoy the service quite a bit. I've asked them to do some tricky stuff with wires and tight time frames and they're super accommodating and fast. But I might shop coverage soon, it's really steep the last few years.

I deal with homeowners insurance virtually every day for work.

IN North LA USAA along with Shelter are the two best for taking care of their customers when it comes to storm damage/insurance claim.

Cannot speak for the auto or the prices but I'd feel comfortable having my home insured with them.

Just whatever you do, under no circumstances should you ever insure your home with State Farm or Allstate.

And sometimes that's iffy although I can't really say what service is like anywhere else since I've been with USAA for nearly 20 years. My husband has been a member for over 40 and he's witnessed the steady decline. We still have all of our insurance with them though.

My current broker/agent is a local guy I really like and shops my insurance around regularly to see if there are better rates. He told me the same, but he's got skin in the game so I wanted to check other sources.

Sounds like rates aren't better generally, so I'm not going to put any energy into switching.

Thank you, OT.

Their rates went sky high when they opened up their risk pool to the whole world several years back and not just restricted to Vets and their offspring like it used to be.

I shouldn't have said the whole world...but they got a lot looser with who could join. They don't advertise it, but if you have pretty much ANY connection to a federal employee...you can get coverage now.

This is mostly my experience, however shopping rates for my college daughter recently and for equal coverage USAA was right there with all the others.

Have made few claims, but when we have support was immediate and didn't result in a premium increase.

My cousin was an appraiser with All State home. I would never go with them based on what she has told me and my experience dealing with them after one of their drivers rear-ended me and totaled my vehicle.

Service is a factor.

People can talk bad on State Farm all they want, but, in the 3 states I’ve lived in they have been great to work with service wise. I have been paid out on all claims with them. I had one home claim go to second review then get paid. Outside that it’s been perfect.
