Is that the Holiday Inn right across Cincinnati next to the Ohio River in Covington, KY?

It's really a function of land value and land available. If you're in an area that's locked by mountains or in the case of New Orleans and New York, waterlocked, then you're going to have to build vertically.

Places like Phoenix, Dallas and Houston don't have that problem. They can spread out and that's why you can have cities like Dallas and Houston that have these huge populations and don't have that big of a skyline in relation to that population

I remember seeing Regina for the first time as a boy. Before the little bit of sprawl it has now. In the middle of this tremendous wide open prairie arose this city. It looked to me like Oz. Cool place for sure.

Houston has the 3rd biggest skyline in the nation and Dallas has the 8th. Their skylines dwarf the New Orleans Skyline relative to population or not. Chicago is not land locked and other than New York has the most skyscrapers in the country.

Looking north from the NRG Stadium where you have the whole Houston skyline laid out before you, with the central cluster, the Texas Medical Center which is own little skyline, and the Galleria area with that 1,000 ft. building (which I think I read once, was the tallest building in the US outside of a CBD,...that's an impressive site that represents fully well the success of Houston's ability to thrive for a few decades now.

I wasn't aware of that. Having been to Houston and Dallas numerous times it just seems like they should have a bigger skyline for the amount of people they have.

at how small downtown NO is compared to other major cities. It's pretty pathetic how much this area holds itself back

IIRC, There was talk after Katrina of just eliminating the city of Waveland altogether.

What’s this based on?

I’m not refuting this, but Dallas’ sky line certainly doesn’t dwarf Nola’s. I have worked in downtown Dallas numerous times and it’s not impressive at all, especially for a city it’s size. That’s said, Dallas has a couple more impressive looking buildings downtown.
Nola’s downtown has 36 buildings of 250ft or more, while and Dallas has 36 of 350ft or more. So they are not that far apart.

Downtown Tampa doesn’t have an impressive skyline for a city metro over 2 million people.
