Plus there’s no rhyme or reason - it all depends on the person.
Thinking back on my high school friends I still have.. one who grew up with nothing is the snobbiest most materialistic person I know (I love her for it). Having no help didn’t teach her to be frugal or cheap. She spends plenty of money.
Another who grew up with nothing couldn’t afford to keep up with colllege/life expenses since she had to work for everything so now she’s a career waitress..
I wasn’t super spoiled but my vehicles were bought for me (and car insurance paid). I now have a great job I love.. zero debt (and never had it). I budget well. My credit is excellent. And I never need my parents’ help anymore.
I understand wanting to teach your children the value of money but purposely stacking cards against them when you can easily afford to help them makes no sense to me.

Y'all let jackalope hijack the frick out of this thread
Point was a NEW CAR
Answer is still no. Kids are young and dumb. They are bad drivers for a reason. The other college kids are probably just as bad drivers or even worse.

I see on here a lot that most people think high school graduation isn't a big deal or a major accomplishment. What are yalls thoughts on big gifts such as a new car for graduating?
There is no way in hell I'd ever buy a kid a new car, much less for something as non-note worthy as graduating high school.

he specifically said a car that will break down
the worst drivers arent college kids imo

I wonder how many people who say "no fricking way" either:
A) don't have kids
B) couldn't afford it anyway

My son graduates this year. He's a 4.0 student with full ride scholarships to multiple schools....and he drives a 10 y.o. Pathfinder. If he wants a new ride, he'll need to buy it(and the insurance) with his own dime. I wasn't raised to be a spoiled arse, neither is he. No entitlement folks at my house.

I have no problem with someone buying their kids new cars when they graduate high school. It’s just not MY thing.
Don’t judge or be jealous if you know people who do, it’s their kids and their money.

It is only likely the biggest life event in the kids life at that point and the very beginning of stepping into adulthood.
Nah. No big deal.

Working a part-time job through High School and paying for it themselves warrants buying a new car for graduation. Not only that but it's probably the best education they will get in high school

If you don't have 3 rental properties and aren't the VP of your company by high school graduation you're a piece of shite snowflake millennial according to the OT

Sounds like growing up and paying your own way thru life.

They basically give you a diploma for showing up, so no. For a good college degree, yes.

Bout 26. After grad school. My dad paid my kids tuition last year even though we didn't need him to. He didn't even tell me that he did it. I asked him why and he told me "old men invest in their grandchildren"

paying your own way is so overrated. families are supposed to help their own.

It must be a SEC thing, most of the Big 10 schools don't allow freshman and sometimes even sophomores to have cars on campus unless they commute.

No graduation warrants a new car. Financial situation should determine amount of car one can afford.

Cudos and well done sir
This world needs a lot more "parents" with this approach to parenting

I bought mine a car before her senior year so she could duel enroll in college.
But to answer the question, no, unless that’s the highest educational level the kid is expected to attain. For my kid there will be at least two more graduations to go.
