New, no. But all of my kids were going off to college, so I bought them decent cars during their senior years. There was always an extra car that they used when they became licensed to drive, but not one that was truly theirs until they were seniors.

Sending a kid to college with a new car is just idiotic with the amount of bumper pool that is played on college campuses and apartment complexes

Kids shouldn't be given new cars. They should have to work for their first one, and it should be a clunker.

And if you're excuse is a brand new car = safety, that's BS. Good driving/not texting/not being aggressive = safety.

A kid should have a car that breaks down, that needs work etc

This is beyond stupid. You can't control anyone else on the road driving like a dipshit.

every day i read threads on here involving parenting it makes me realize how lucky i was growing up

i think some of you are intent on making your kids life harder than it needs to be. why have kids if youre going to be a shithead parent?

It's called defensive driving, and it's proven to work better than being passive. Always lookout for possible scenarios, act pre-emptively, and think/drive like everyone is out to frick your shite up. Proven to work. And teens especially need to learn it.

Holy shite, lmfao

Yeah let’s buy your teenage daughter a vehicle that will purposely put her in danger at worst, and likely cause more headache/work/money for you at best.

LMAOOOOOOO

I can just imagine my commute from Central to LSU where I passed the Hollywood exit, Evangeline exit, etc in a car that was bought in hopes it would break down My dad flips when he finds out some of the ghetto shortcuts I take NOW and I’m 27 in a brand new car.

In my world, it would depend on the next step. I did not and would not buy either of my boys a new car simply for graduating high school.

I offered my oldest son this deal. When you graduate, if you will start college, we will pay for the college completely, buy you a car and give you spending money as long as you are in school and keep your grades up. That was the same deal that I was offered from my father

You simply cannot 100% control anything and passing up on a safe car because you think you can is retarded.

The only thing you can 100% control is buying a highly rated safe vehicle.

You are saying to give my kid a car that will break down because it will build character and give her/him life experiences.

Id rather spend a little extra money on a car with a warranty and wont have my kid on side of the interstate broken down while drunks are driving by at 70mph

I have 2 girls (I'm also from Central btw) and I won't put them in old beaters that will break down at any moment. It might not be new but I'll have them in decent, reliable vehicles when the time comes.

I wasn't allowed to drive until I learned how to change a tire, change a battery, change headlights, change the oil, and replace the posi-trac rear end on a Plymouth

My children had to buy their own cars. I’m just not that generous.

Sure. At my high school graduation there were more than a dozen new cars in the parking lot with big bows on them. I got a new Jeep for graduation, but luckily I was allowed to pick it out myself a few weeks before graduation. Lots of Accords, Camry's etc were given as surprises

Isn't it kind of tradition at this point? All 3 of my siblings also got new cars for graduation as has my oldest nephew.

I see on here a lot that most people think high school graduation isn't a big deal or a major accomplishment. What are yalls thoughts on big gifts such as a new car for graduating?

I don't think it is a major accomplishment, unless you graduated at, or near, the top of their class.

I didn't get a car until my parents got tired of driving me to work. And even then I paid insurance and gas.

To me, no job = no car.

maybe so. My wife grew up with a lot less financial support than I did and she calls me spoiled all of the time. I'm not going to buy my kids a BMW or anything but maybe a Honda with 50k on it.
