Does HS graduation warrant a new car
Posted by ElectricWizard0 on 12/17/17 at 1:21 pm141
I see on here a lot that most people think high school graduation isn't a big deal or a major accomplishment. What are yalls thoughts on big gifts such as a new car for graduating?

I already had a 2 yr old truck when I graduated. Why would I have needed a new one?

If they're not already driving a new car then yes

Sure, if you can afford it. Insurance for a teen driver is sky high.

Is the graduate employed?

It’s really not a big deal. We keep it below $35,000 for the car.

I don’t think so. Very reliable used if they don’t have one but not new.

“New” as in brand new, no miles, right out the factory... not in my opinion
“New” as in they didn’t have a car in high school or the one they did have was a beater that might explode on 50+ mile trips so you get them a gently used vehicle for college... then sure

My son graduates this year. He's a 4.0 student with full ride scholarships to multiple schools....and he drives a 10 y.o. Pathfinder. If he wants a new ride, he'll need to buy it(and the insurance) with his own dime.
I wasn't raised to be a spoiled arse, neither is he. No entitlement folks at my house.

No. But then I’ve of the mind that someone shouldn’t be rewarded just because they aren’t stupid.

Not for me. I got a brand new 83 5.0 Mustang on my 16th birthday. I kept that car until I graduated LSU.

The better gift of a new car is after college, when it's more appreciated and more needed.

yes if the parents can afford it, why not
the hatred for people with money, especially on this board, is laughable

if they graduate top of class with honors and get a scholorship then yes.
if not honors but they did well in school and are going to technical school then get them a very nice used car
if they arent planning to go to college then no, go get a job and buy your own car or if you have to, buy then a clunker to use for work until they can afford to buy something better.
i had a brother and two sisters and none of us got a car when we graduated high school, well dad did gave my brother (the first one to graduate) his old car with 70k miles on it because they offered nothing for trade in value for it back in 1980. back then cars rarely ever lasted more then 100k mile

My parents bought my first 3 vehicles. I graduated college with zero debt because my parents paid my tuition, books etc. They also paid a 15% downpayment on our first house as a wedding gift. I turned out just fine
