Even though I was poor I got a used car when I turned 17. If my dad could have afforded something nicer I'm sure he would have gotten me that instead. Was the safest used car he could afford in his very limited budget. And he made sure I always had AAA in case anything happened.

I had friends that got brand new cars when they turned 16/17. They turned out just fine. If you have the money and want to do that for your child, who cares?

I had a old clunker through HS, but in my senior year my mom and dad bought me a new car for an early graduation present.

My kids got preowned cars while in HS. Nothing fancy, yet nothing they were ashamed of, lots of their friends didn't have their own cars and the promise that if they graduated college, I would help them out with a new car. They kept their promise and I kept mine.

Hell yeah! How many miles when you got rid of it?

Buying a new car for a teen only proves one thing; you're stupid. Exception would be if you are mega rich. But, even for 'well off' folks, this is a stupid idea. It's literally throwing thousands of dollars away. Get a used car, put $1000 in a mutual fund. With compounding interest over the years you'll have a million dollar retirement fund.

To each their own. It's just not how I was raised, or how I'm raising my children. There are enough people with their hands out in this world. My 4 kids won't be in that number.

....and herein lies the issue. Somewhere you were taught being given everything equates to love.

Helping your kid out with a vehicle to get to college ( since he is apparently a 4.0 student) equates to being given everything ? Im not saying you have to buy him a 2017 chevy but damn man. I hope the pathfinder holds up

College graduation may warrant a new car but high school gets a CarMax car.

The better gift of a new car is after college, when it's more appreciated and more needed.

Cars take a beating on campus when college girls have to park next to you. Wait until after college and the new car will have a lot less dings.

I call BS since we have an MLB pitcher on the MSB. He can surely afford a Ferrari

Odds are someone here has OT baller money and can afford it

I definitely wouldn't go new bc more than likely the graduate still isnt a really great driver and/or defensive driver. They are still at the age where they want to drive like a bat outta hell and try to “be cool” around their friends.

Besides, insurance on a teen driver is outrageous. They are still backing into shite, taking curves too fast, blowing through stop signs bc they are texting about what Sally said on facebook about Michelles instagram picture, and for whatever reason still don't comprehend that a green light at a left turn means you have to yield to oncoming traffic.
