It's amazing how outdated doctrine still persists today.
If revolvers were so superior, they'd be a staple of every major military on earth, but they're not.
I’m not really a revolver enthusiast, but they certainly have their place. Much like with LE, being a staple of the military is much more about capacity, and the speed and ease of reloads, than about being a superior weapon. Before my boat accident, I had a few nice examples of both, and by and large revolvers are more accurate, with fewer moving parts.

I have two in my collection, GP100 Match Champion and a mint 1977 Dan Wesson 15-2 VH Pistol Pack. Love to add a single action, 45LC or such.

Again, VERY old perception. SAs actually have an advantage in mechanical accuracy since the bullet engages rifling almost immediately. With a revolver, it has to pass through part of the chamber then the forcing cone before engaging the rifling. While you will find variations from model to model and pistol to pistol a modern pistol from a quality manufacturer of either ilk will be more than accurate enough for defensive deployment.

Go to OB, but Judge is obvious answer

I bought my wife a hammerless Ruger LCR in .357 magnum. Works great in the purse.

Multi rounds and a controllable caliber is what you need
If you get a derringer chambered in 45-70, the ammo capacity no longer is an issue. If you manage to hold onto it after the first shot, you’ll use the second shot on yourself.

This. I have one of this and it fits in my pocket.

Do not go the derringer route.

You'll get better answers on the Outdoor Board.
Every major manufacturer (Glock, Ruger, Sig, Bersa, Taurus, etc.) has a compact .380 these days, and they are extremely popular for carry. There are also many compact 9 mm, but they will be just a bit bigger/heavier. The semi-automatics of today are very reliable, while being slimmer than a revolver.
The Ruger LCP .380 with a Crimson Trace Laserguard is very popular for carry.
But if someone is hell bent on a revolver, there are models like the Ruger LCR (light compact revolver). The aluminum frame model comes in .22 LR, .22 Magnum, and .38 Special. A heavier steel-frame model comes in .357 Magnum, 9mm, and .327 Federal Magnum. Ruger site
Go to a gun show or shop where you can handle various models to see how they fit your hand. You'll probably find that a derringer style (which can come in many calibers) is awkward as hell. I can recall my mother trying to hit a 5 gallon bucket with one from a few feet away. Nope.
Some ranges will let you rent pistols so you can shoot them and see how you like them. Our local one has a ladies night, where they shoot free and can get some advice and help.
Good luck.

What you call perception, I call experience. I carry a Glock 23, have a Sig, Beretta, and an XD at home, and have shot many more. None of them will outshoot my GP100 or Smith wheel guns. TIFWIW.

Depends on the caliber of the derringer

Im not reading the whole thread, but you really need to not put a pistol with no trigger guard or any pistol in a purse without it being in some sort of holster.
And skip the 22, thats not really the time/place for a 22.

that's the gun my mom carries, in .22 mag. it comes with interchangeable barrels, she seems to like it.
They make belt buckles that they fit into as well if you're feeling extra fancy.

Maybe just carry a hatpin. My great great grandmother next left home without one. Excellent girl weapon for a girl.
Or man up and get the 9mm.
