No and the world would probably be a better place without it, the positive aspects of social media are quickly being overtaken by the negative.

Like others have said, follow news organizations and reporters. Follow people specifically assigned to the topic you are interested in. If you like the Saints, follow a couple reporters that you are aware of and twitter will recommend more. You'll also learn about new people to follow when you see people retweeting something from someone you don't already follow.

New advice I would give is to not follow any celebrities or athletes. At first, I thought following comedians or athletes would be cool, but I quickly learned they pretty much only posted advertisements or annoying shite. So, it's mostly news for me.

Yes. Awesome platform to get news and info quickly. You can follow writers, news orgs, ECT and they tweet the link to their stuff. You can also follow things like baseball reference that tweet out interesting stats and such everyday.

How do you get the breaking news though? Do you follow certain people and those provide the news, or I guess not necessarily individuals but company twitter accounts?

I follow news stations, reporters, sports guys, some media personalities etc

One example of Twitter being helpful is during severe weather, a lot of meteorologists use it as another platform to get warning information out. Saw it used just yesterday to share information about flash flooding in the Birmingham area.

How though unless everyone in Birmingham is following that meteorologist?

You can even get push notifications sent to your phone for individual accounts.

So, for example, during NBA free agency I go to Adrian Wojnarowski's account and set it so I get notified any time he tweets.

So I can be walking down the street and my phone will buzz and I'll pick it up and get the latest NBA free agency news immediately after he sends the tweet. It's instantaneous right to my phone on my lock screen with NBA news.

I have an account but I almost never tweet anything. It's mostly for following other people. I follow beat reporters for the teams I care about. If one of them tweets something I know it will likely be about a team I like. I also follow local craft breweries and receive tweets regarding special events, new beers on tap, etc.

People tweet links to the breaking news stories and links to live feeds as well. Great for recruiting info.

If you live in Birmingham, even if you don't follow the meteorologist, chances are one of your friends does. Somebody will most likely retweet the meteorologist and you will see their tweet in your feed even though you don't follow them.

Or if there is a hurricane coming, you'll most likely see it in the trending topics. Click on it and you see all of the top tweets relating to the hurricane from people you don't even follow.

If you're on TD, you don't need twitter. All the breaking news comes here anyway.

Hat tip to our TD twitter users for breaking the news here for us.

Does everyone in Birmingham have to watch the news for a news broadcast to be helpful to warn of severe weather?

I am strictly a passive user...but if you don't have a Twitter account I have no idea how you consume news from relevant sources.

Also, Twitter can overthrow Governments. Pretty neat.

Twitter is the GOAT social media app.

I'd go as far as to say it's better than FB/IG or whatever else combined.

do you have to "follow" every reporter just in case they tweet something important? That seems very decentralized and inefficient.
How is FB and IG any different? Not sure if you're insinuating only Twitter has that issue, so forgive me if I misread it.

So they have Twitter accounts divided into topics? Similar to how forums have different sub forums etc?

Eh, sorta. If you use the Search bar, it shows you what is trending, so you can see what everyone is saying about a topic. It's basically the easiest way to see what's pretty big in the news on Twitter, and there's other random things as well you'll find.

As another poster said, you can use lists to divide different Twitter folks so you can sort by that list, if you want to see what only types of certain people are tweeting.

You follow said meteorologist. He/she tweets info. You see it on your Twitter timeline.

Prime is giving great info. As he said, you can also set notifications so if you know the weather is going to get bad, you can set it to notify your phone any time that meteorologist tweets.

I use it for breaking news, and to be able to respond to recruits when they say "Badger fans, let me hear you"...and I post lots of emojis and tell them how much we love them and how awesome they are.
