Yes, because I wanted it to be a convo with non-tech nerds

Either your friends are losers or you don't have much to offer on the personality front.

I am a huge sports fan, a movie nut, and watch way too much television, but I’m in the market for a new TV and reading reviews/boards about the the options and there are 80+” TVs that people are putting in their living room. That seems ridiculous.
If you have a theater room that is for that purpose I get it, but it is absurd what some people are putting in the main “entertaining” rooms in their homes. Dare I say even trashy? TV's shouldn't be the centerpiece to a damn house. 65” is more than enough television and I just can’t see a reason to get past that. To me it feels like it has gotten to a point of diminishing returns.
My living room is huge. The wall space above my fireplace is huge. I have a 70" and it fits perfectly in that space. Actually I could have gone bigger. The TV fits proportionate for the room and wall size. So no, not trashy.

Downvote away...
Sounds like your living room isn't big enough...We have an 82 inch tv in our living room and it is

Yeah it can get annoying, but a lot of variables.
Fire places can range from shorter to really tall, mantles can be offset much higher or right above fireplace, etc.
Ours would work (though not sold on location yet), especially if we tilt the TV angle down a little to help viewing angle.
This. Above the fireplace was our only option. We have a low fireplace and mantle, plus we are far enough away that the tilt we put on it makes the view angle perfect.

You're supposed to talk to each other and not watch TV (outside of a sports event).
Everyone is different. Sometimes we talk. Sometimes we watch sports. Sometimes we watch movies.
I don't even have a fireplace. We had the builder leave it out. I don't need one in South Lousiana, and I hate the current trend of fireplaces being the focal point of the living room. The main thing I do in the living room is watch TV and play video games so I want that as my focal point to maximize my investment in my home theater.
I have a 75 in screen and almost weekly think to myself that I should have bought an 85 in

my iphone 10 inches from my face is same size as my 55" 10 feet from my face.

I don't think a TV should be the centerpiece of a living room, so it's a 55 max for my taste.
Now, Den, Gameroom, slap a giant one up.

If it's proportionate to the size of the room and the wall it's on it won't be the centerpiece, even if it is a 70" or 80".

My 70" looks tiny in my living room

I tend to agree though. There are definite exceptions depending on the room.
