Been having discussions with friends about whether the young engineers will be able to retire off O&G or if there will be great decrease in the need for PEs before that time comes. Would the OT stay in O&G and risk it or change industries while you're young and still can? Obviously some Petroleum Engineers will always be needed but how much smaller will that number be in 30 years?

It's possible that they will be less needed but that won't be because of any decrease in the use/necessity of petroleum....it will be because technology comes along that makes them less important.

It's also not a guarantee. If you think you have the discipline to do things that can help you in oil price down turns then the petroleum engineering field is a fairly viable field and I it's a relatively safe bet that it will be 30 years from now.

You're joking right? If you're asking about retiring in LA as a Petro Eng I may not call you retarded because O&G has migrated out slowly but in general? Cmon man, please tell me you weren't smart enough to get close enough to graduate to have this thought.

yes, petroleum will still be needed in the future. Besides, they're pulling in so much money now, you could stack it up and retire before then anyway.

71% of all oil and gas produced goes towards transpiration (cars, trucks, planes, ect.). I guess the only reason I question it is if electric or some other form of cars take off in the next 30 years where would that leave the demand?
