I'm mechanical engineering in a petroleum field. The only benefit to a Pete degree is recruitment. After a year or so, almost any engineering degree can catch up.

My father remembers this discussion of a dieing industry in the early 60s. Then they kept drilling deeper, further out, and more efficiently.

The good ones are in management within 10 years and from there you have way more flexibility to jump to another industry

In 30 years, not much will be needed besides manual labor and interpersonal communications.
