re: Do you think Louisiana focuses too much on college graduate employees

There is nothing wrong with blue collar work, this board though has somehow glorified it into something it isn't. It's a good life for simple people. Weld for ten hours, go home, drink a bud light, play with Paxton and Brayleigh, call it a day, wake up and do it again for the next 40 years.

I've done it already and it did

then one day they’ll die and that’s exactly what their life amounted to.
Ironically, the exact reason I stopped being an expat POS making 6 figures barely in my 20s.
It was a matter of time before I woke up with a liver too swollen to function or stroked out during a hangover.
Final straw, a buddy of mine took a jump off of a 10th floor balcony on new years. Had a wife, had kids, and he still couldn't cope.
Three days later, I was stateside, unemployed, in college again, and quietly dragging myself through a third pointless BS.
I'd rather die over educated and poor.

OP
I am surprised that you do not seem to grasp the economic desirability of a well trained/educated workforce in improving economic conditions in a state where too many of our residents work in low paying jobs.

I actually agree with you on part of that. There’s some absolutely dynamite people who are living those lives, shite half my family does. That certainly is ok, but are they living up to their full potential? Do you think they’re happy or did they just settle-in and adopt the learned helplessness that has come to define Louisiana citizens.
Why invest in college, or try to start a business when I can buy thousands of dollars worth of Yeti products? A company that wouldn’t bat an eye if you lost your money on them....
Why continue to feed car dealers that lick their chops when they see a 19-year-old back from his first hitch... buying through ignorance because Jason Aldean told him that he needs a 70k truck and a cold beer to get some pussy.

So you are making 6% less than those states because of income tax, and yes, you are the exception.
Taxes are slightly lower in TN and a wash in TX. I'm not arguing that LA is a nicer place than those places (it's not) but I have a family and other things that factor in.

Mostly this. Upward mobility is a foreign concept for so many in this state. And that isn't limited to work either, it extends to health, traveling, just bettering one's self in general. Who needs all that when you can make 52k with overtime, drink your one domestic beer, travel to Destin, and eat at Logan's Roadhouse on Friday nights.

I could move to a high cost of living area for a 30% or so raise but it would cost me 50% more to live there
I stay mostly for family. If my employment situation changes I might look out of state. If not, I'll probably let my daughter finish school and live 5 miles from her grandparents.

Very much so.
Technically school is very underrated and the jobsthat come out of them pay extremely well

Technical school is a good option for a lot of people, I'm not discrediting it. But, most of those jobs don't come with good benefits as far as 401k, insurance, time off, etc, etc. You can live a decent life with a technical job, but it shouldn't be a goal for a lot of people.

Plant operators look through their Costa sunglasses, while driving their diesel pickups, in their newly constructed Acadian style homes at you college boys making 35K a year.
I'm on the fence with this one. I've been a Systems Analyst/DBA in manufacturing IT for 17yrs. One of my first projects when I came home from Dallas to work in a plant was to learn the 11ty-billion pay codes for Union Hourly Employees. Then, develop and automate at monthly report for the plant manager that showed all the Hourly employees who have grossed over 100k the prior 12months.
This was 01 and my salary was 52k plus a 1500 bonus and reloc expenses.
This report made me question the frick out of my decision to get ISDS and Finance degrees from LSU.
But years later I don't mind they make more than I do. I make a lot more than I used to and work about 38-45hrs a week in a nice big office.
I also have a great view of oak trees and pasture full of armadillos frickin off during the day like I do on the OT.
TLDR. Degreed nerd who doesn't hate on hourly folks making more than I do.

But why do you care if they drink Bud Lite and enjoy going to the Destin. If they are happy, why do you look down on them. I get TDecline on those living outside their means but if they enjoy the work they do and are good people who are you to tell them their life is shite.

I don't care. It just seems like an unfulfilling life to anyone who has an IQ north of 100.

Not really. You could just be good at your job.
Companies will pay top dollar for quality workers. The discrepancy regarding salary is mostly in entry-level positions.
Possibly so. I have 15+ years of experience in my field so definitely not entry level.

That's my degree as well. Lsu grad 2000.

This is highly subjective. There is no path which is universally fulfilling or not.
Posted on 2/24/18 at 1:42 pm to NIH
To you and even me yes, unfulfilling but why add the insult about a low IQ. Some people just have different values. What if his fulfillment is spending more time with his family, or fishing, or hunting, or volunteering at his church. Fulfillment doesn't come from a bank account.
Now the costa guy in the 70k truck making 50k a year with bad finances may have less than a 100 IQ.

Most companies are Lawful Evil by nature.
This is where you lost me. My biggest problem with the job market is so many entry level jobs required so much experience. If I had 2-3 years experience, why would I be applying for an entry level job?
