I think even the most trusted written history is hardly better than half accurate, if we were able to experience it for ourselves to compare.
A lot of history written after the fact was either from the biased perspective of the writer (we had to read Howard Zinn in HS) or based on news reporting which has always largely been fabricated bullshite.

Seeing all of the nonsense during the BLM era really makes me wonder about what we’re taught about the civil rights era.
Did things really happen just like we’re taught or is a lot of it propaganda?
Imagine 30 years from now what school children might be taught about George Floyd or Michael Brown. Or they might be taught about how black people have been fighting to get the racist police to stop unjustly killing them even though we know that’s a load of BS based on lies.
It really makes me wonder how accurate the history of the civil rights movement is, and I never questioned it or gave it a second thought before.

I think I was pretty lucky and had some great history teachers. Andrew Martin at BRHS was tough with his tests and could be an arse sometimes, but he loved history and he taught it well. I had Gaines Foster at LSU and I thought he was great. There was another one at LSU whose name I cannot remember, but he was interesting and taught post WWII history, and I think had written a biography of Dean Rusk. The Cold War was his wheelhouse. I believe what they taught was factual and pretty straight-forward but encouraged you to dig deeper. That was 30+ years ago now though so God only knows what they are telling kids these days.

I was in DOD Schools. My English teacher had an English degree, History teachers had History degrees. For example my Freshman History Teacher, threw the textbook in the garbage can and taught the entire year from copies of his Master’s Thesis from WashingtonState University at Desert High School, Edward’s AFB, California……a base with no fences.
Graduated from Yamato HS, Tokyo, Japan. We had no liberal teachers trying to indoctrinate anyone. We were behind falling barbed wire fences in Japan.
Freshman year in college was a bore.

Lies My Teacher Told is a good book. Lost to History as well. We are taught history very poorly in this country. Watch Ken Burns' The American Revolution. Very solid.

I don’t so much question “what” happened, but as I’ve gotten older I don’t always trust the “why” it happened or “who” was behind it that I was taught.

In HS you are not going to necessarily get a lot of indepth examination of historical events. It's a lot of standard stuff handed to you that is designed for you to regurgitate for a test.
