And see... Im in a low COL area but my salary starts w a 1. I think the most frustrating thing is I dont know my wife understands the extent of the stress. All she sees is the product not the process. July was alot..her and my son's bday plus we took a weekend trip to hot springs. I saved for some of it over the prior months and put some on credit which is fine cause I mapped out my August...exactly when mortgage, car note, his tuition was gonna get drawn...I paid for July in August...we haven't gone out to eat ive packed a sandwich to work everyday then bam.... blew out a tire and needed another new one bc of wear... $350 in one swipe and had to rework everything. Wife just said..oh sorry babe..thats annoying. I'm also complaining about 1st world problems cause I do have savings and a 401k and I've never worried if im gonna make mortgage or anything else...but frick for what I do the hours I put in we should coasting. But this just flat isnt an economy where 1 income does it anymore.... its fricking frustrating.
Yep, I hear every word of that. And btw I guarantee the COL differences wipe out nearly all of our salary differences. And I can’t exactly leave here because of 1) job and 2) family is putting down roots.
Also, add in the fact that every appliance seems to be a POS that you’re lucky to get 5 years out of and we have to regularly crawl back to Train or GE or whatever and ask can I please buy another HVAC / refrigerator / dishwasher from you please?
They effectively make you rent even when you own.

Your username being "Boss" has me doubting your claims. I know dozens of people who call themself "Boss" and make 5 figures. For your wife to be putting in $44,000 a year in her 401k, she has to be making over $300k, which is unlikely. Also if she makes that, and you make that, and you're on pace to have $4.5 mil by the time you retire, there's no reason you should have $450k of debt.
This doesn't add up.

Got a card thats 0% apr till maybe midway through 2026 and I have a complex about touching my on hand savings unless its a holy fricking shite the world is ending emergency...so yea.... I mean obviously im not gonna live balls to the wall and run that card up cause you eventually gotta pay the piper...but it ain't hurting me to out a little there and take a hit to pay it off
Idk why you reaching like hell to poke holes in what I do or where im at man.

Wait til you have another kid. We have a special needs child. Both her and our son are headed to college but her expenses have been well over a million dollars in her short lifetime. Completely fricks up financial stability.
Now we are good. Wife maxes 401k and with company match she is putting in 44000 a year. I will have a pension which will give me 60-70k when we retire.
No car notes, mortgage at 2.75 percent (owe 450k), but indulgences are traveling and my wife buying every fricking thing that Amazon sells.
All in all we live a good life and do what we want. Once we get through first semester tuition with kids things will get easier. Right now we will retire with 4.5 million projected and my pension plus SS for both of us if it is solvent.
Add onto that inheritance (which I don’t) and we would be at 7.5 or so when we retire. My parents and her parents live way, way below their means and they live off of pensions, SS, and Va disability. So their retirement just keeps growing.

For your wife to be putting in $44,000 a year into her 401k, she has to be making over $300k, which is highly unlikely as less than 00.2% of women make over $300k. That's 1 in 500 women make that much. Also if she makes that, and you make that, and you're on pace to have $4.5 mil by the time you retire, there's no reason you should have $450k of debt.
This doesn't add up. In addition, this is the OT, which is breeding grounds for people to paint a life they want others to think they have, but don't.

Because you’re being dishonest. You’ve added a caveat to every subsequent post

That undermines your original post.
The two options are you’re an idiot with your money or being yet another poster that has the bizarre fetish with wanting to claim being poor while saving 20% of their gross income.
Both make you a dumbass
Posted on 8/9/25 at 5:14 pm to Mingo Was His NameO
When did I claim to be poor? I admitted to being frustrated that I work reslly hard and feel like I should be further ahead have more frick around money then acknowledge that im bitching about first world problems...I dont see where any post ive made contradicts the original.

Currently at or slightly below, but in the past 20 years, we have been all three. Our incomes have varied greatly as we have opened and closed businesses and changed jobs, but we’re in a pretty good spot right now. My hope is that by the end of the year, we can pay down some debt and reduce our monthly bills expenses.
Posted on 8/9/25 at 5:20 pm to Artificial Ignorance
Well below, it’s nice not having a mortgage or credit card debt and only one vehicle note which has about a year left. We also live in a rural Parish where money goes a lot further than it does just 30 miles down the highway, at least for the time being.

Clearly you don't have a concept of how some of these things work.
You can't solve backwards to income on 401k contributions because you don't know what the company contributions are. They could be contributing up to 25% of her total compensation and that would not include her deferrals.
Debt is not always bad, despite what many talking heads spout. With rates that low you are better off investing extra funds than paying down that mortgage. You would do better in a money market right now than paying down the mortgage.

Bro. A lot of people are not in a big hurry to pay off their sub 3% mortgages.

I feel that. Depending on the year my pre-tax income starts with 2 and sometimes a 3.
Don’t feel bad. One day you’ll get you income up to $40k and you’ll live like a king

My debt and bills are well below my means. I splurge on optional spends like vacations and eating out but those things can go away if something comes up.
I have a mortgage but no other debt of any kind and I'm planning to keep it that way. One day the mortgage will be gone too.
