Factor in all the extra fuel costs, wear and tear on vehicles, tolls, and travel time, and it's not the great deal you think it is.

ETA: Northshore life doesn't appeal to me at all. But we still like doing fun things. My BIL lives in a nice area in Mandeville, but they're boring people these days. I wouldn't mind having the size of his lot where I am, but it'd cost about $500k just for the land.

What fun things can you do in Nola that you can't do in the north shore?
Movies
Parks
Lakes
Restaurants
Shops
Driving 45 minutes for the festivals every odd weekend isn't much different than driving 15....
I just have never gotten how much more fun Nola is once your older with kids. It doesn't seem to present much more

We still like to get rowdy on occasion. I find myself unimpressed with the food on the Northshore. If I'm paying inflated prices, which I always feel like I am on the northshore, I'd rather spend that money on restaurants here.
A minimum of an extra hour round trip is definitely a pain to me. You left off the zoo, aquarium, etc. Lots of fun things for kids.
It's obviously a different strokes for different folks situation though. For us, we have no desire to be on the northshore at this time.

But honestly in the last year the only things I have done that I couldn't have on the north shore is the zoo pretty much. But global wildlife kinda sets that off
My normal weekday is go to work and come home. I could do that anywhere
My normal weekend is take the little one for donuts, then go to some park and let him run around
Then go home and either go to dinner somewhere easy with friends or grill out at home and have people over

You know there are parts of Metairie that are basically on the parish line, right? My commute to downtown is 10 minutes or less most days.
