how many posters in this thread used to laugh at old people for reading travel brochures and watching travelogues?

Did it today for an internal job posting on workday. Workday shows you the exact address of the team for the job opening. This particular job was in 2 grand central station building in NYC. I just imagined myself living in NYC for a little while. I figure that would be a neat experience for about 6 months.

Last one I did was Boston. I looked at the violent crime incidents map. Then I looked at another map of demographics and it matched up perfectly. That’s how you figure out where to move and where not to move in a city. (Shrugs )
Boston is cool.

I like watching the silent videos of walking through cities in 4k on YT. One of the night ones of Tokyo has put a strong desire to visit, and makes me wish I lived there.

By random region or city I suppose you might mean a place like Eastern Europe or Warsaw.

Nope never done this for Europe. Mainly just US because that’s realistic. I could never realistically see myself living in Europe so I don’t bother.

I feel like this is a special form of -tism that is apparently more common than I originally thought.

Yes. I read about places that I may consider retiring to.

Yeah occasionally I do the thing where I pretend I won the lottery and go on Zillow and look up different cities that I'd like to live in.

Yes, for several years when planning a move out Wisconsin back to the South. Considered Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas and investigated housing prices, school ratings, proximity to fishing, restaurants, crime statistics and weather along with other information.

When I go abroad (insert Beavis laugh here), I research where I’m staying nights like I’m going to need emergency services there.

Even in a really nice hotel; I’m not going to have a medical emergency and not know there’s a hospital ER right out the back door while I’m waiting 20 minutes on an ambulance by the front door.

This extends (obviously) to places that I might want to visit.

I don’t print street view pages of intersections or turn by turn road directions. I rent a car with a factory GPS, program everything into it and let the best solution be the best solution.

i had a Rand McNally atlas as a kid that i studied. People are always surprised when i throw out random cities and how to get to certain places having never been there.

I also still know all 50 capitals.

All the time. My latest kick was Burlington, Vermont. I've looked at real estate, jobs, schools, etc. I even signed up for job listings.

I learned a few things doing this. Their real estate market is fricked. Their state jobs surprisingly don't pay as well as Louisiana, and there's not a lot of great jobs at all. But I'll make it work.

The Whole Foods method will help as a launchpad for where to look for nice places to live in a new city. Wherever there's a Whole Foods, you're typically in a good area for at least a mile or two.
