I only used those because the cheap paper plates at Walmart were very flimsy so you had to improvise otherwise your food ended up on the floor.

I have 4 kids. We use paper. We aren’t washing 6 plates three times a day.

Same. And kids don't just eat meals they snack all day. It would be like cleaning 8-10 plates three times a day. Team Paper Plates!

I just got tired of using regulates plates and cups and basically sitting them in the dishwasher for several days until i got enough stuff in there to turn the dishwasher on.

I'll never understand this. In the time it takes you to pre wash dishes for the dishrinser you can just wash the dish(es) by hand. I cannot stand old, crusty arse dishes sitting in a dishrinser for days, or not having what I want at hand because it is just hanging out, dirty, in the dishrinser. It takes all of a minute to handwash a plate and glass.

You aren't supposed to prewash anything. Scrape whatever's left in the trash and then straight into the dishwasher. No rinsing needed.

Pre-washing is actually bad for the dishwasher and uses a ton of water.

I work a full time job and have 3 kids and have never been so busy that I can't bear to spend less than 8 minutes putting away the clean dishes.

Y'all are lazy as hell.

You can tell who is single vs family in this thread

Yeah, when I was single, I always just washed everything by hand.

Now that I have kids, we run a load in the dishwasher every night.

That was a general observation. Not directly specifically at you.

I'm judging all the people who say they have kids therefore they can't be bothered to empty a dishwasher or not let dishes pile up in the sink.

Usually don’t use paper plates, but have some ready when we do. We used to use them almost all the time.

I buy the super cheap ones to use as quick cutting boards, covers for stuff in the microwave, and if we are having a sandwich or snack.

Not trashy. Except the part where they do create a lot more literal trash.

Do you use linen napkins? Wash and press them, fold them and put them away? If you use paper napkins your entire argument is BS

This has been a shocking thread to read. I had no idea regular paper plate usage was this ubiquitous. Does this make me classy?

Same here. Shocked at this thread.

My wife’s family likes to sue paper plates etc at Thanksgiving etc. F that, at the nicest meals of the year I want a real plate with a real fork and knife.

No, you still have the UGA to get beaten out of you. But at least we can assume you have a full set of teeth to go along with that floppy arse hair.

Most energy efficient dishwashers can wash a full load of dishes using only 3-5 gallons.

ummmm
quote:

Running a dishwasher uses approximately 3-15 gallons of water, depending on the age and efficiency of the machine, whereas washing 12 place settings (including dishes, glasses and cutlery) by hand uses approximately 27 gallons of water.

quote:

So doing the math, factoring in the use of water to make the ceramic plates:

600 paper plates x 3/4 gallons of water = 450 gallons of water

600 plates / 14 place settings = 42.8 dish washer cycles = 43 dish washer cylces

43 dish washer cycles x 10 gallons of water= 430 gallons of water

43 dish washer cycles x 15 gallons of water= 645 gallons of water

So reusable plates and a dishwasher you use anywhere from 430 to 645 gallons of water compared to the 450 gallons of water it takes to make 600 paper plates. So shockingly there is not much a of difference in terms of the effect on the environment.
