Change my oil, my wife's oil, and my weekend truck oil as well. Rotate tires too... it's definitely cheaper to do myself, but it's really not about cost, it's that i just don't trust the quick oil change places. I've seen them screw stuff up enough to feel warranted in that regard.

If you are talking about actually taking 4 old tires off the wheels and putting on four new tires and balancing/aligning, then I think this is a much bigger task/pain in the arse than a lot of people realize particularly without the expensive equipment they have at an auto shop. You cannot convince me the cost of installation of four new tires isn't worth the work (and possible investment in machinery) to do it yourself. Changing oil isn't as difficult but it's pretty cheap to get someone else to do that so again cost/benefit has me paying for that too.
If you are talking about simply changing a flat (i.e., putting on spare) then yes everyone should know how to do that.

Oil?? Hell yeah I do my own. Gives me a chance to check the other fluids, tire pressure etc. I'm not leaving that to somebody else. Plus while the oil is draining I do other chores outside.
Tires, hell no. I can't balance my tires. Change a tire you need them balanced.

I change my own oil because I can do it faster than the guys I would have to pay to do it. I can change my tires if I have a flat, but if I have to buy new tires, I just let the guys who I buy it from put it on. Not to mention I don't know how to put a new tire on a rim. They have a machine that does it for them.

The only time I've ever had an issue with a service shop was when a guy tried to get me to bring my truck in because I supposedly had a 70% oil leak. Turned out it was bullshite. Other than that, no issues.

I used to change my own oil when I worked for a transportation company in Houston. We had a big shop with pits for the trucks so I would just pull in after hours. Super easy when they have troughs to drip the oil into and a tank to dispose of it.
Now I just take it to get the oil changed, it’s too much of a pain to do it in my driveway

used to. bought a new truck and i get up to 5 free oil changes a year for lifetime of my vehicle

Synthetic oil/filter costs me $30 and I can do it in 15 minutes in my driveway. Twisting a wrench and letting the oil drain into a pan is not rocket science, and I don't have to waste an hour of my time waiting for a $8.00 and hour methead to strip my drainplug or put in too much/not enough oil. Plus I get to hang out in my driveway and blast the neighbors with some Skynyrd.

I change my own oil and rotate the tires.
I like using an OEM filter and oil which is $44ish at the dealer versus $80 for them to do it.
I already have all of the tools too, including torque wrenches, so I may as well do it and know it was done correctly.

No to tires.
I’m contemplating oil but leaning to no.
I just changed my brakes for the first time. It’s so easy and I’ll never pay someone to do it again.

No it isn't. Look if you just enjoy changing your own oil, fine just fricking say that. Or if you just don't trust anyone else to do it, say that.
Do NOT say that you can do it cheaper than you can get it done though, because no, you can't.
There are places up here that do oil changes for S15 with up to 5 quarts of oil. $2 more a quart for synthetic takes it up to $25.
Now I just looked at various prices for oil wholesale . Cheapest I can find buying through my dad's business is $3.99 for Mobile 1 Synthetic , whichever grade you like. For a vehicle that takes 5 quarts that is $20 just for the oil. Then another $5 for the filter. ANd that is wholesale prices, which you as a shade tree mechanic changing your oil are not getting. You're paying AT LEAST %6 a quart for synthetic oil and at least $6 for an oil filter, so you are paying at least $36 for oil and a filter. Or double what the cheapest price in town for an oil change.
You are NOT saving money by changing your own oil.
Plus I suspect most people are not properly disposing of the used motor oil to boot.
And that isn't even considering the time you have invested in driving to the store to buy oil and a filter or the time involved in properly disposing of the used oil.
