Schrodinger’s Cat.
Right now the possibility of either is equally true, until one is not.
You can say it makes no sense that there’s no way life doesn’t exist elsewhere. It’s still not scientific proof.
I think it’s highly probable to exist. It’s even more probable that we’ll never find intelligence. The only way to conceive of that probability is to do the math. Specifically the math that explains the vastness of the universe and the distance between objects. Not to mention the sheer number of objects. The only real chance is send out Von Nueman/Bracewell probes,
We’ll be extinct before they make contact.

And to think they aren’t out there because WE haven’t found them is even more naive.
quote:Only maybe. It all depends on where the Great Filter is. And that’s completely impossible for us to have any insight into right now given that we have only set foot on a single planet to date. But the possibility that it’s in our past cannot be ruled out.
To think there aren’t other life forms out there is naive.
I fluctuate on this, but I think my ‘best case scenario’ hope is that we are the universe’s attempt to understand itself. Meaning we are in fact the only truly intelligent life in the universe. I’m which case, it would be our duty to spend the rest of time exploring and expanding. Manifest destiny on a universal level. And since you’re right about the universe being virtually infinite, it would mean that the responsibility to expand is permanent, consistently giving us something more to reach for.

What if we find some extremely old probe from an ancient civilization that just happened to cross our solar system?

If there are, indeed, other life forms out there that have the the tech to reach Earth (unbelievably far),
We wound be likw earthworms to them.
Why would they even contact us? What is to gain?

You know OweO, you're an OT treasure and this board is better for your presence. Thanks for these terrific threads of yours.
Moving on.
No, I don't believe space aliens are aware of earth. This notion that aliens have visited planet earth are absurd and speak to the collective psychology of not wanting to feel alone.
Also, what do people really think would happen if aliens did visit? I mean do folks actually think these frickers are gonna just pop in, mutilate some cattle, do a little anal probing and when they're finished, hit the bricks?
No, that's not gonna happen.
Here's how we definitively know aliens aren't aware of earth and have never been here. Our species isn't extinct.

Do the math.. here:

I think we still don't really understand what life is exactly. We definitely don't understand how the first life formed, or even How did DNA RNA came to be be? How did DNA and mRNA start working together to do protein synthesis? I don't think either of those questions will be answered in my lifetime. I do think it's likely life formed by a natural process here on earth, but I think that process is much more complicated than we can imagine.
As for intelligent life visiting earth, I don't think it's likely that has or ever will happen.
It's more likely that a form of intelligent life has or will exist somewhere in the universe other than earth. I think is less likely humans will ever know when or where. Until someone proves Einstein wrong, that's what I'm sticking with.

We are in a simulation.
So the programer of our universe, if he lives on another planet, is aware.
