No, but I do believe that things can and will happen to all of us (that we want, desire, or seek) if WE can allow our minds to not be filled with anxiety, fears, or impatience. It allows us to be in the best position position to accept these gifts, if they are to happen.

However, I've also learned through my disappointments that the things I really thought I wanted (and even needed) that didn't turn out the way I initially thought I wanted them to have actually become some of the best things that DIDN'T happen for me.

Why should we all embrace hard determinism? Whether reflective of reality or not, it’s never struck me as a constructive philosophy to embrace.

somewhat but you have to make things happen. You won't get that job you want if you don't apply for it. But once you apply, if its meant to be, it'll happen.

no, if you want it to happen, take concrete steps to make it happen. shite doesnt just happen and other than the lottery...there is no such thing as luck

luck is nothing more than preparation meeting opportunity.

Truth.

We control our outcomes, we're not victims and our only real battle is internal.

I believe that most people actively undermine their own success. They can’t get out of their own way. The prospects of prosperity/financial success/ enduring love take a certain focus and modification of bad habits and psychological tendencies. So when it falls apart , they have that cliche “ I guess it just wasn’t meant to be “ to fall back on.

Why can’t I find the man of my dreams ? Ummm maybe because you are relentlessly negative and in a self fulfilling prophecy spiral of doom?

Why don’t I have many friends? Maybe because you don’t engage people in a positive way ?

Why can’t I achieve professional success? Maybe because you aren’t willing to put in the sacrifice and time?

All of these scenarios ends in someone saying “ I guess it wasn’t meant to be”. It’s how we console ourselves for not having the life we want. To have the life you want you have to give up the soothing cliches, modify your behavior and make your vision of life happen.

And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation – some face of my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and my attitudes.

I do believe "everything happens for a reason" but I don't agree with the thread title.

This. Without getting into Calvinism, if you believe God is omniscient, everything is preordained. We don’t have that knowledge, but it doesn’t mean that we can affect it. We’re just playing out the script without knowing what our next line is.

I don’t embrace it, I just accept it. It’s very possible to accept it without just being passive about everything that happens. The illusion of free will doesn’t keep me from acting from a free will perspective.

yes and no. I don't think everything in our lives are "meant to be", but I also believe certain things are.

For example, a little over 23 years ago this girl started work where I did. About a month later she sets me up with this girl she knew. Went out on a blind date with said girl. We were married 18 months later and are still happily married. The girl that set us up quit her job just a few weeks later and I haven't seen her since.

Right. In the end we choose most of our outcomes and blame fate.

Ehh, just because God knows what our future decisions will be doesn't mean He's made those decisions for us.

That’s all fine, but he suggested we all embrace it. Trying to figure out what good would come from that

We don't need to embrace it because it doesn't seem true in the moment. I just don't see how there can be an alternative. There's either a God with a plan, or everything from the past causes everthing that will be.

So, from John Calvin to Sam Harris, free will is an illusion.

Oh, I see what you're saying. I should have used a different word. I don't mean that we should all embrace it. It's just as good to ignore it.
More accurately, that's the position that we should simply adopt or hold because it's True.
