I remember how heavy my 20" color Sony was 30 some years ago.
The current generation of TV's is amazing. My 8 year old Samsung 75" is only HD, but still looks great for sports and movies. Haven't been to a movie theater in years.

I remember being in college when people who could afford it were switching out to thin flat screens.
Had a few relatives trick me into taking their old box big screens. Didn’t realize I was being duped at the time. Fast forward several years and I dumped them behind a goodwill because even goodwill no longer accepted them.

The plasmas have been out fashion for awhile but honestly up until the current OLED nothing compared. I just phased out my Panasonic a year or two ago.

I still think it's amazing. They used CRTs for 50 years on the consumer electronics market, and they wrecked it in under a decade. I still feel like a plasma that you took care of to prevent burn in looks great.
And like last poster said, a good plasma with no burn-ins still looked better in standard 1080p than most LEDs on the market up until OLED.
I still have a 42 inch Samsung (blue light power button) in my office. I make sure I don't leave it on when I leave the room, I've had it since around 2007 I think and it still looks great.

The original high definition absolutely blew my mind.
I will never forget seeing "Planet Earth" for the first time in HD. I don't think I blinked for an hour and my mouth was just wide open. It still looks amazing today

Sometime around 2006 I bought a 50" plasma for about $2k (some no-name chinese brand). That thing probably cost $10/month in electricty and $15/month added to my cooling cost. Felt like it weighed 175lbs.
Those colors popped though.

My buddy bought one for 10k when they first came out. It might be 40 inches. He still has it on top of his fireplace in an extra room. He said he paid so much for it he’s never taking it down lol.

I remember how much my first plasma, a 50" Samsung, would heat up my living room.

I loved my Panasonic but the downside to the TV is it was an energy consuming mother. The Plasma I had consumed over 600 watts of electricity and Entergy loved every second of it. The new LED TVs consume around 40 watts of electricity.

Panasonic TV's were the shite. I finally got rid of my 2005 32inch HD wide screen tube TV last year and it still worked with a decent picture. . Just took up too much real estate. I still have my 2009 50 inch plasma. Picture is still great.

Don't get me started on home computers circa 2000.
A modern cell phone is a super computer by comparison and it makes calls and takes great pictures too.

I still have a Samsung plasma 60" mounted on the wall. That picture is still the king of HDTV.

I knew a guy that had a huge plasma tv. I think he spent between $1500 and $2000 for it. He had a dvd player, Nintendo Wii, and another video game console hooked up too.
The day after his manufacturer warranty expired his screen melted. The mother board was fried bc of being overworked for so long with everything running basically the whole day. He brought it to a tv repair shop and owner told him he can’t fix it. He would have to get a new tv.
Never got a plasma for that and he never bought a tv without extended warranty.

I still have a 65" Panasonic plasma in my living room as my main TV. I bought it in the last couple months right before Panasonic stopped making them. I love that damn TV. Picture is still great. It's got to be almost 10 years old.

While I remember things like everyone is describing, I also remember the short period of time in which people started buying HD flatscreens, but not really understanding how to properly set them up. I have a distinct memory of standing in my uncle’s living room where he was “showing off” his new HD flatscreen TV, with everyone telling him how great it looked, while I just stood there in silence thinking “that looks like absolute shite… it’s all grainy and squished…” because it was a standard def cable broadcast just blown up and stretched to fit the screen. Fortunately, it only took about a year for people to figure that shite out, and everyone could stop pretending to admire the emperor’s new clothes

Around 2000, a buddy traded a used Rolex for a big Pioneer plasma that had “fallen off a truck”. I think retail on it at the time was around $19,000.

Still have one OP. In the living room. Going strong. We don’t really watch TV though. The thing probably only runs a couple hours a month. It may last forever!

First flat screen TV I bought was a 42" Toshiba I think. It was about 4 inches thick LCD and I paid almost $2000 for it. It seemed huge at the time. Now the smallest one I have is a 55" and it's less than an inch thick and it was less than $500
