Remember when tellers were hot? Remember when stewardesses were hot?

The world is going in the wrong direction.

Ah yes lets eliminate more jobs to help corporate profits. Great idea

Exactly. When all the jobs are gone, who is going to buy anything?

Despite the sky is falling crowds fears technology creates more and better jobs than it eliminates. Any emerging technologies will be the same. Don't ask me what those jobs will be because anyone who can answer that question will be wealthy like Elon Musk and I ain't that bright but I do know that emerging technology has always been feared as eliminating jobs and the jobs it has always elminated have been better jobs and more of them.

I seriously think AI is going to prove to do this on steroids. It will elminate the need for a good many people to be in an office or job site 40+ hours a week and commute...this means a LOT of opportunity for small businesses and living in rural areas for anyone who can stop wringing their hands long enough to take advantage of them.

For example I have been working on, as a hobby, 2 consumer products with limited, at best, commercial viability. It has taken me nearly 2 years to design the electronics....not full time, maybe 20 hours total time....and AI confirmed the design logic in about 20 minutes. Down to the component level. With some pretty good suggestions of materials and design elements I had not thought of. Some one who had never thought of these products could suddenly have the idea, use AI and replicate 20 hours of work in 20 minutes today. That is significant.

We have a bank in my building lobby. Four tellers just sitting there with no customers 90% of the time. Sometimes on payday you get some folks lined up, but even the end of the month looks slow.

Who uses bank tellers?

I cant remember the last time I used a teller at a bank. The only time I have set foot in a bank in years was to get something notarized and it was the most convenient place to do so that I knew would have a notary.

On the same subject when is the last time you wrote a check? I seriously don't know if I remember how to do so.....

They have apps and phone scans for that now. I don't use them but my bank spams me with this information whenever I go into the branch to deposit a check.

Go to any Frost Bank in Houston.. They have tellers but no bulletproof glass. You can actually walk behind the counters from several directions. As Chris Rock once said.... they have "money machines" that dispense the money securely if you are making a withdrawal.

Great service.

It's all fun and games doing everything online until you hit a snag. Sheila the teller will straighten out my problem while you're still being routed through the voicemail maze to talk to "Dave" in Bangalore

I don’t use them daily or even monthly. But I have to go into the lobby at least 4-5 times per year for different types of transactions. It feels old school but is also nice to interact with a human sometimes, even if just for a minor task.

Mobile banking solves this need to drive to the bank.

PNC has a bank branch with tellers but no fricking money! I shite you not. You can't cash/deposit anything. Just able to do the same shite you can do online. What's the point?

LNB acquired Ouachita National Bank in the late eighties and promptly choked on all of ONB's bad real estate loans. Through some financial sleight of hand it spun off its nonperforming assets into a zombie bank and reorganized as Premier. Premier rocked on for a while until Bank One acquired it, then Chase eventually acquired Bank One.
