Much like cashiers at a grocery store, there is still a need for them but not nearly as many as in the past. Most bank transactions can be done easier and faster at an ATM or with the mobile app. However, some people prefer a live human to take care of their financial transactions for various reasons.

I went to pay my mortgage

Why? I've been a homeowner since 2005 and I don't think I've ever once paid my mortgage in person. At first, we mailed a check every month but for the last 12-14 years it has all been done online.

Does it really matter why? Chase really thought they were onto something by firing a bunch of tellers and moving to almost all electronic banking. And it did not go the way they planned at all.

The point is that yes, tellers are still needed to some degree. If I didn't show in person to pay my mortgage, there still would have been a line there waiting for one teller.

I deposited 7 checks the other day. I hadn't been to the bank in about a month and they were smaller checks and I'm definitely not balling out, but I agree with you. How would you desposit checks without a bank teller?

Most branch ATMs take check and cash deposits - some models take up to a mix of 100 checks and bank notes in one transaction. The cash is verfied, and the checks are imaged, and you get a receipt of the check images.

Most of the banks I go into now have one teller manning both the drive thru and the lobby, and if they get busy, the branch manager goes back there and helps out.

It was just a question. This a message board and a general discussion about bank tellers which my question was related to.

I agree that tellers are still needed (less now than in the past) which I stated clearly in my previous post.

If people didn't go to a teller for things that are done much easier and faster online or at an atm, there wouldn't be a line that long.

So I'll ask again, why do you go to a bank teller to pay a mortgage? There must be a reason that you do or you wouldn't do it. I'm just trying to understand. If it's a good reason then maybe I'll start doing that. Maybe I'm the one doing it wrong.

Our businesses go about once a week to deposit cash, get small bills, and coins. Until people stop using cash, we have to go to the bank to keep that operation in place.

There's no need for them. Let's get rid of money orders too.

Boomers. Boomers need bank tellers and paper deposit slips still.
