re: Do waiters expect to get tipped post tax?

IF they understood that
is one of the most common, lucrative jobs in America,
then maybe being attentive would not be so damn taxing.
I understand that waiting on tables is tough but you can learn a TON about human interaction this way leading to a solid career.

I recently went to Iceland, where there is no tipping, however, they pay their servers a true working wage, which is reflected in the price of your meal.
And? We're not really discussing the money being spent, we're discussing the model in general. It's not about saving money, it's about the expectations that are placed on the customer and could efficiently be eliminated if tipping was eliminated.

That is patently false but whatever
No it isn't.
Eliminate tipping in it's entirety at every single restaurant in the country, and watch the customer service quality plummet at restaurants.

There are also plenty of countries where tipping is unnecessary and service at restaurants is fine.
Like a previous poster said, it gets built into the price.
Not to mention, as a former server, there's no way in hell I'd ever wait tables for minimum wage. No server worth anything would. Thus you are left with people who provide mediocre service as a server.

You have that backwards, fella.

Same people bitching about tipping are going to be mad when restaurants are forced to pay minimum wage to their servers, their meal is 50% more expensive, and their dining experience is absolutely terrible because Bonqueesha from Wal-Mart is the best they could find for $8/hr.

Not sure if it was answered in the previous pages, but it doesn't sound like the OP has ever waited tables.

None of this is true. I've been to many family owned restaurants/bars where the servers, bartenders, waitresses are all paid minimum wage plus tips or even WELL ABOVE minimum wage plus tips and the food/drinks are NOT 50% more expensive.
See my previous post. If you did this for EVERY restaurant, you can't convince me any server worth their salt isn't finding another job. Then you're left with shite for wait staff.
It may work at this family owned joints (because they're freaking family), but it won't work for every restaurant if you ban tipping.
People on the OT need to use their brain once in a while and do some critical thinking.

Most waitresses/bartenders I know usually just blow/frick an ole man that owns a company for long enough and they get an office job at his company for 60K a yr.

Get in the line with almost all other servers. That is why servers make much more than that.

The employees get paid minimum wage one way or the other, so the cost of food skyrocketing by bumping the rate and eliminating tips makes no logical sense.
Waiters probably make double min wage on average. Pay them that, and the only people that will feel it are shitty tippers.

Not per my customer reviews.
Thankfully you don't count on earning tips off jokes, because that was pretty weak.

I don't think the waitress did $20 worth of work,
She actually probably did. Waiters are responsible for more than just getting your drink order. They also do other work in the restaurant.
And the guy who thinks he pays for 8 minute worth of service...were you at the table for only 8 minutes? If not, then every minute that you were there was a minute she didn't turn the table over for another customer. If you set up shop and chat with your friend for 2 hours after you finish your $12 meal, you need to pay for your time.
When my niece makes a mess, we pay a niece tax, a bigger tip since they have more to do before they can seat that table again. Taxes are paid not only on the hourly wage but the sales. You are expected to tip more on a $300 tab than a $30 tab because 8% of 300 is a lot more than 8% of 30 which is how taxes on waiters are determined.
So: hourly wages are taxed, sales are taxed, waiters tip out to bartenders (10 - 15%%), bussers (10%), and food runners (5%). So the $20 you leave on $100 will probably net the server as much as $18 and as little as $15 before she pays taxes on her sales.
Factor in the assholes who tip $2 regardless and those who don't tip, and waiters aren't quite rolling in the money like most of you think.
When I waited tables I was in college. I did it primarily because of the schedule flexibility not the OT baller status. Gotta say all in all, I had a good experience and I liked it.

$15.00 is the wage guarantee for restaurant folk here in Seattle at some upper tier restaurants. And yes, people are outraged, because instead of making $40 per hour, they're stuck at making $30K a year.

Then the market will adjust. I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand for some of you. Adequate service is provided at acceptable prices in almost every country outside of the US. This thread has proven that many current and former waiters need to get off their high horse regarding the quality of work they provide for the money they make. It's laughable that so many of you think you're irreplaceable.

And the service is better in most cases than a 2.13/hr server or bartender just working for tips.

I was replying to the post quoted. Not your previous post.
As far as eliminating tipping as a whole, I still don't think the price of meals would go up.

How would what I give to a person as a tip negatively affect what the restaurant takes in as revenue?
Hint: It doesn't.

No. You really aren't.
You've demonstrated multiple times in this thread you have no idea how the restaurant industry works.
Really all you have told us is you are a lazy arse tightwad. It's too much for you to save money by cooking yourself but you cry over having to actually pay for being served by others.
You sound just like the jackasses who bitch about millennials being entitled while you yourself believe you deserve more for less.
Congrats on making yourself look like an ignorant fool.

Let me confirm what you're saying. You think Waiters pay taxes on the sales and not the income from hourly wages and tips?
