Lets say you are serving tables in a restaurant where you get paid $2.15 an hour. You bring them the check after taking care of them, and they didnt tip. Then they continue to sit at that table asking you to refill their sodas for another 2 hours while they sit there and talk. Now why would that server give a rats arse about taking care of them when they didnt take care of you. You are essentially working for free at that point.
Under the current model, you're right, but we're not advocating that. If tips were eliminated you wouldn't be getting paid $2.15/hr.

Which is exactly why I am arguing that as an employee, you should get paid for every hour you work. You'd be more likely to do your job if you got paid to do it, correct?

I stopped signing the bill until I was ready to leave because of people like you. Don't take it before I leave, trash ball. We'll be gone as soon as my kid finishes mashing his cheerios to pieces under your table.

Whenever this debate pops up on the OT I'm always a little amazed that there aren't more restaurants in the states that blow up the tipping model. Obviously there are many potential customers who are pining for a new alternative.
Some kind of way the restauranteurs who line their pockets with the savings in payroll taxes and the like have convinced the service staff to do their bidding.

quote:hard to completely argue this point, but as someone who has worked the front and back of the house at a nice restaurant before, the service part is a lot tougher of a gig. I'm sure plenty of people will downplay servers because of the experiences they have had with the shitty ones, which is fair. But managers would have to pay these servers at high end restaurants a pretty decent salary to compare with the back of the house and it's something that most restaurants can't afford. Hence they would have to inflate prices.

But I came in this thread to frick with the frugal people who won't tip, not as much argue opposite spectrum of should workers be on salary or not. The fact is, servers are not on salary at 99% of places, so don't be a dick.

The bussers will come clean all that up. And dont worry, you wouldn't have to tip them, they are on salary.

Nah, there are just people who talk a big game on the internet then go tip 20% at Chili's because they'd feel bad if they didn't.

This is either a lie or way too specific to whatever experience you had. I was a busser before a server and I made $2.13 + tips.
I was also a food runner and same deal.

I'd be willing to pay more for my meal if it meant not having to leave a tip and the waiters would leave me the frick alone.

It was glorious for a HS student. Ended up making about $10/hour, up to $14 on busy weekends/holidays. Tip our was 3% of sales for the restaurant.
I asked for and received a raise to $5/hour plus tip out, and then moved to 50/50 busser/host. Making $14-15/hour opening the door or seating people seemed criminal.

But the cook still does his job without tips? Crazy!

It was my first lesson in going to get what I wanted instead of sitting back and bitching. The other bussers did nothing but complain that hostesses got the same tip out (which really was bullshite), so I just moved on over to the easy job. Used to love listening to girls bitch about their job.
One shift was literally sitting in the back rolling silver way all night. I couldn't believe it. I used to go out back with some of the cooks and chug beers and shite while I waited for clean silverware. I loved that job.
Also met my wife there, so quite a successful run I had.

Waiters have to check on your throughout the meal because otherwise those that throw out compliants after eating/drinking 75% of the food/drink want a discount because it wasn't right. Properly trained servers that cruise by & check on you, refill drinks, bus plates, etc. are quality control experts. Plain & simple.
