Or do they just pay out of pocket when they need it?

That's what's on my mind at the moment.

Then what are you doing here?

Yes, they have insurance.

I work with a lot of rich, older people and they get their knee/hip surgeries at the end of the year like the rest of us when they've hit their deductible.

You don't get rich by being stupid with money...usually.

You have to have health insurance by law and unless you are a billionaire it's not worth to self insure probably. So, yes, they do.

I actually just dropped my insurance. $600 a month for shite coverage in a young healthy person is insane (thanks obama)

I can afford to cover myself.

Apparently catastrophic plans will be available soon, i will probably get one when available.

I'd imagine that rich people have a lot more insurance in all aspects of their life

Yes. It is really cheap compared to the real costs can be. That is why the government and many health insurers lose so much money on it.

you'd have to be extremely wealthy to be fine with skipping insurance and covering a major medical event

young and rich? High deductible health plan and an HSA, so technically, yes.

My health insurance is a T-bone steak, a Miller High Life, and a cigar

If you have a planned surgery...call up the hospital and ask to speak to the finance mgr. Give them the exact procedure and then ask what the cash price is. I.e. if you walk in there with literal cash.

You will be amazed at the price difference vs what the insurance company lays out for it. In some cases, it will end up being less than your co-insurance plus whatever is left on your deductible for the year.

How rich we talking?? B/c a catastrophic illness is how you'd become less rich.
