Do people try to guess what Southern state you're from based on your accent

When you're up north or in a big city?
Do they ever get it right?

No. And sometimes they guess places in the north.

Not if you're from south of I-10.

No. I moved the Texas 20 years ago. I now sound Texan. Pretty distinctive.
I can tell the difference in a South Carolina accent compared to a Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas or Georgia accent. Mississippi throws me off and Florida is hard, too.

Yes all the time. No one has ever guessed LA on the first try.

ha! y'all's accents in South LA are pretty distinct. I've heard some folks from NO that sound like they're from brooklyn. But other than that it's usually pretty easy to tell imho.
North LA folks just sound like they're from East TX to me.

Those people are called yats. I will leave it at that.

Yeah, Texas might be the easiest since there's so many of us. Though I've had other Texans think I was from Georgia.

what's the usual guess?

People never think I am from the South. I lost whatever accent I had.

Usually people have no idea I'm from the south and wouldn't guess it.

People assume I'm from the north when I actually grew up in Georgia simply because I have seemingly no accent. However I ever since I was little made damn sure to not develop a southern accent of any kind due to not wanting to sound like a redneck.

I used to teach at a private military academy. We had a fairly significant number of kids from Louisiana.
That Brooklyn-like accent out of N.O. caught me by surprise at first. Both of the kids I taught that had it were the kids of lawyers...Tulane alumni as well.

Growing up in Nawlins, I'm usually mistaken for a Yankee. The y'all throws them.

I was in the Caribbean once and a guy from Texas asked me what country I was from after a brief chat... I replied "Alabama".

Was at a diner in NYC eating breakfast (Im from Shreveport, sometimes I get a neck twang), had an old Russian lady as waitress that said "You moust be from Texas".

The Carolinas and south La. are the most distinctive.

I get a lot of North Carolina or Georgia, which honestly I don't think is even close to being accurate, but whatever.

I'm from NOLA and people up north never get guess it right because of my accent. They think I sound like a New Yorker instead of Farmer Fran
