If you actually need a hotel or something, I'd expect they would cover. Anything short of that I would not imagine it'd be worth fretting over.

I think for out of town candidates it is rare that they (the company doing the hiring) don’t pay.

If the company made me pay my own way to interview in another city or state, that would tell me all I need to know about them

Every job interview I have ever had has required flying. They either pay for the travel before I leave, or reimburse me promptly. Always.

FWIW, if I offered some kid an on site interview and he asked if he could Skype instead, I would cross him off the list pretty quick.

And then you'd tell him to get off your lawn

Big companies usually pay if you need to fly. But if it's a big pay increase like you said, it's probably worth the $40 in gas to pay yourself, even if you don't get it.

I made extra money by taking job interviews out of town in college.

Hotel, free meals, and I make extra money off mileage? frick yes I'll pretend to be interested in your job that I'm totally not taking.

If you're coming from a significant distance away most companies will fly you in.

They'll probably pay their current mileage rate (approx. $0.50-0.60/mile)

Government rate is .545 for 2018.

Yes. Parking, plane fare, rental car, hotel, meals, etc. In fact I wasn't as concerned about the salary offer as I was about getting a crack at that expense account.

I have driven to houston from metarie and not given reimbursement. But I have other universities pay for me to fly from nola to indiana and miami. I think indiana had me buy the ticket and they cut me check when i submitted receipt.

My son has an interview with a major aerospace developer soon. They are flying him in, putting him in a hotel and renting him a car.

Sure but maybe not for 2.5 hours.

So many variables.

Main one is your skill.
If you are hot you get a hotel room.
If not so hot, be glad to get your face in front of them.
