I find it annoying not when idiling at a light but when I’m in a yield/turn situation. It’ll shut off right when I’m trying to turn across traffic or pull out into traffic.

More wear and tear

Cranking the engine every 30 seconds in traffic is rough

what deductible do you have for comp/collision? Glass is covered under comp. I chose $500 for mine, could have chosen whatever, $100, $500, $1,000, etc.

Why? There’s very little difference in price to have no or 100

It's a step up but the BMW X7 looks like a big time winner. Impressive.

I'll never buy a BMW after the shite that's been coming out on them and their dealer network.

That and they completely abandoned their focus on driving experience.

Spoken like someone who’s probably never driven or been inside a German car.

Hybrids have been doing it for over a decade.

Mercedes are all too common these days and they're expensive as frick to maintain and repair.

Are you buying as a status symbol or to upgrade functionality?

You're paying for the brand more than anything IMO. No different than Nike putting a swoosh on sweatshop tshirts. Increases the cost 20×.

Or possibly luxury?

Some people can afford to drive something nicer than an American or Japanese car.

Are there no American or Japanese luxury brands?

Actually cheaper vehicles do a pretty good job in terms of interior luxury. I always found engine performance to be the largest factor in price difference. I'm not sure how much of an engine upgrade would make a difference to his wife. Especially if shes not complaining about a 10 year old minivan.

German luxury is a cut above the Japanese counterparts and miles ahead of American. Fit and finish, refinement, material quality, etc is just better from the German automakers.

Lincoln hit a home run with the new navigator, but that’s about it in terms of American luxury that can compete with something from mb, bmw, audi.

Would his wife who drives a 10 year old minivan care about the difference between Japanese luxury brands and German?

I dont disagree with you, I just think you're approaching the OP as if you were getting behind the wheel. Of course you're knowledgeable, but I seriously his wife would know the difference.

A new vehicle period would be a major upgrade for her. Is she going to be less excited if she got a Lexus than if she got a Mercedes? If yes, why?

OP says she likes the gle- I’d assume that means they’ve test driven the gle along with all the other similar vehicles. If that isn’t the case then they obviously need to spend a weekend at some car dealerships; Mercedes or otherwise.

I’d personally take an xc90, x5 or Q7 over the current gle, but that’s just me. Next year’s gle looks amazing though.

The point being, is that there is a very small difference in monthly premiums if you go with the $100 deductible than a $500 and $1000 deductible. If you have a Mercedes and know a windshield costs $2000+ out of pocket, it seems feasible to get the $100 deductible.

However, each their own I guess.

Insurers are smart enough to know that a Mercedes windshield is 2000+ and it is reflected in the premium difference for a $100 deductible which just one of many reasons my wife no longer has a Mercedes.

I have a 2016 Mercedes C63 AMG and the premium difference was $4/month more for a $100 deductible over a $500 deductible. To replace my windshield would cost $1800 OEM with the rain sensor, definitely feel you on the cost of ownership is rather high.

My ex GF had an ML. The thing was a rolling turd. I was constantly over at her place trying to figure out how to fix the damn POS for her until she finally got rid of it and her dad bought her a new Q5.

Leaking sunroof. Replaced weatherstrip; didn’t fix issue. Turned out to be “misaligned.”

Power steering pressure hose leaked like a sieve even after being replaced by the dealer once.

Fuel pump had to be replaced at 80k after it left her stranded.

The sound system would randomly shut off for absolutely no reason. Dealer couldn’t figure out why. My theory was a bad fuse. Ended up being the case.

TPMS sensors would be triggered by a fricking hill.

The last straw was when the car would intermittently go into “limp mode.”

That thing was such a lemon.

I have a '15 ML350. I had an Expedition before it, and want to go back to an Expedition. I miss the cargo room and the ability to bring kids and guests in one car instead of taking 2. And I hate the maintenance costs.
