My grandfather was also in the merchant marines. He was on boats running ammo i can remember he told me the only time he felt for his life was was they ran across a uboat and just knew they were done in. But a blimp dropped depth charges on it and sunk it. Amazing times and amazing men

My FIL was a B 17 pilot. His plane was the only one to come back one mission. He pulled German schrapnel out of the plane when he landed. He cried about it when he told us the story. RIP Fred.

Tons of stories. A lot of them were funny. Guys who faced death everyday did some goofy shite for a laugh. Not all of course were funny. Two that stood out:
My great uncle was a B-17 pilot. He was in the flight line, waiting for his turn to taxi out. Then he saw a guy walk out onto the flight line, just walking aimlessly. Walked right into a prop on a B-17 across the flight line. Guy just snapped and couldn’t take another mission and just killed himself.
Neighbor served on a battleship. A kamakazie came in and slammed into the ship. He was manning a 20mm antiaircraft gun. He said when the plane hit, to him it was like time slowed down. He was able to focus in onto a piece of shrapnel coming right at him. He was strapped into the gun, and leaned back as far as he could. The shrapnel passed right in front of him, giving him a deep cut across his chest. He said as soon as it passed, he snapped out of whatever kind of trance he was in and was back in “real time.” Said it was the weirdest damn thing how his brain was able to zero in on that one piece of shrapnel in all the chaos of fire and smoke.

my moms uncle was an MP guarding prisoners for the nuremburg trials. he was one of gorings personal guards. they apparently were very chummy and when goring died, it was believed he slipped him the cyanide. it was apparently a legit scandal for my moms uncle and is something that stuck with him for the rest of his life. i believe he finally had his named cleared back in like 2006. ive been told we have some of gorings silverware floating around the fringe of the family somewhere

My dad passed last year. He never really talked about the bad things too much, just that it was tough. One thing he told me was that the Turks were toughest men alive. He said they were all huge men( my dad was 6’3” himself )anyway dad and his buddy was at a bar ,the Turks were there. The Turks all carried these huge bayonets. My dads buddy ask him could he look at it, the Turk pulls it out and let’s him look at it. When dads friend hands it back the Turk cuts his own hand on purpose. My dad ask him “ what are you doing ?” He tells them it’s a Turkish rule.... If they pull it out before it goes back in there must be blood on it

I interviewed my great grandpa for a social studies fair project in junior high. Need to see if I can do some digging on the old family computer and find it. Would be cool to read again.

Dad’s dad was radio operator on B24 in Italy primarily bombing Romanian Oil fields. Shot down 2x and smuggled back by partisans. He had a strange sense of humor. Said that they had to shite in shoeboxes because planes didn’t have bathrooms. When they would land in Italy kids would run up to the plane begging for anything, chocolate, cigarettes etc. grandpa said he’ll never forget their faces when they opened shoebox full of shite.
Moms dad served in korea, know very little about it except he walked with a cane from Chinese grenade.
Father in Law was in a tank in Vietnam. He said he has all stories written down and in due time I can read them. One of the few stories I’ve heard is when his buddy contracted a hooker it was fixing to be an ambush in the jungle by VC, he hustled up there and killed one man with pistol.

One grandfather was TEC 5 in WW2. He was in the general engineers. If the army had a piece of heavy equipment he could run it except a jeep, he flipped one breaking his arm. My other grandfather was too old for WW2, he worked for Higgins shipyard. My grandmother had a brother that owned and operated a shrimp boat at the start of the war, which lead to a draft exemption. He sold the boat and within 2 months he was drafted into the Navy. My other grandmother had two brothers in the Navy during WW2.
I had a great-great grandfather (and his brother)who was in the 1st Tennessee heavy artillery, they were taken prisoner at Fort Morgan Alabama. His other brother fought with Lee and was present at Appomattox Courthouse when Lee surrenders. My great-great grandfather became a Lawyer and Judge. One of his brothers became a D.D.S. and the other became a MD (doing some of his studies at Tulane).

My great uncle was on the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. He was one of the ones below deck when it rolled, he spent hours in pitch black waist deep water and everything was upside down. He was one of the lucky 32 men that they cut out and rescued. Cant even imagine what that was like

Sometimes it is better to talk about combat experiences, different for everyone

“war is hell son, hope you never have to go through it”.
This. My Dad told a lot stories about funny things that happened, but none of the dirty details. About the only story I heard from about actual combat was that they policed up about 250 dead Chinese after having fired all night. (He was a mortar gunner).
