My dad was first wave Omaha Beach. One time when he was waiting to go in for a heart procedure I asked him if he was scared. His response was, “Of dying? No. I wasn’t supposed to get off that beach alive. Every day after that has been a blessing.”
I’ve got a ton of stories. He passed in 2005 at 89.

Both of my grandads were in WWII. One of them was a Navy pilot who was hit by a kamikaze near where Bush and the Flyboys story took place and spent 2.5 years as POW in Japan. My other grandad was in the Army and stationed on some island near New Zealand; he said their only job was to protect a radio tower that was not ever going to be attacked, so they spent the majority of their time shooting wild pigs and cooking them on the beach. I think I'd take the beach bbq experience over the POW experince

During WW2 my grandfather’s best friend was blown to bits standing next to him on the deck. He used to tell the story of having to clean up the “pieces” of his friend.

My dad would tell me about a creepy guy he served with in Okinawa (WWII), that kept going AWOL. They would catch him with a pair of pliers and a pocket full of Japanese gold teeth. He also told me that they would sometimes show movies using a bedsheet as a screen across to palm trees. Ever so often you would hear the guards shout out or shoot because some of the Japs would come out of hiding from the tunnels in the hills to get a closer look at the movie from the bushes.

My paternal grandfather was a radio operator. He was typically deployed to the front lines right after we captured new territory. European theater.
Told me a story of having to climb the Eiffel Tower at night to put up radio comms after the Allies reclaimed Paris. Said it was in disarray, stuff falling apart. Wasn't sure he would make it.
Also had a story about him and another driving a Jeep and they suddenly realized they were in a minefield. Guy asked my grandfather how they were getting out. "The exact same way we came in." Guy backed up the Jeep super slow while my grandfather guided him out, tread for tread.
Crazy stories!
