Depends on the age. I have seen kids in the 10-12 range that run circles around everyone in the league to later find out they didn’t make their high school varsity team. Some kids develop early and turns out that is their peek.
I remember my progression through leagues starting with t-ball in ‘79. YMCA through 5th grade BREC through 8th then American Legion with my high school team over the summers. Skip put on a fall ball league my junior and senior years where u went to his batting cages one night then did fielding another night then played games on Saturday.

Been to a few tournaments to watch my 12 year old nephews travel ball team..
I will say that these teams may not be filled with Mike Trout Jr's, but they are doing some impressive stuff for 12U
Double steals, squeeze bunts, pitch out /pickoff plays, etc
They still drop routine fly balls, but some of the cerebral stuff these 12yr olds are doing (in real time) is pretty cool. Although as some have said, playing baseball for 90 hours a week might drill that in to them

Hotels need to eat by having parents stay there during the weekends.
Tournament organizers need to make a living off travel ball parents.

Have you been introduced to cheer yet? Travel ball is a pimple on an elephant’s arse in cost compared to cheer, lol.

Teach them to weld, drive a standard, cook how to grow a garden. 99% of those kids won't play ball past high school. Waste of time and money!

Some secret! That’s almost exactly what the previous dozen posts said.

Travel ball is a relatively new phenomenon and no need for it. Play different sports and be a kid. Parents want to think their kid is in the MLB in 7th grade

It ain’t about the kids.
It is local revenue scheme to build larger and more advanced baseball and softball complexes. Then you have to staff them. The local recreation district then needs to hope that 2-4 tournaments a month year round is enough to bring in enough in gate tickets, concessions, and hotel taxes to cover the bond issue to build those parks and the full and part time labor that goes with it to maintenance the facilities and staff game day events.
I was amazed in Sulphur at what they have accomplished with their baseball and softball complexes. Some places will get bond issues to go big to build like Sulphur while others will be conservative and build without debt like Terrebonne (Bayou Country Sports Park), but it will take years if not decades to get on the same level as a place like Sulphur.

Travel ball in any sport has now become rec quality because it’s so watered down. Add in the daddy ball or whose mom gives the best bj’s and that’s travel ball.
Had a kid that played with my daughter. Couldn’t make the highschool roster but started over 2 freshman all state and 3 other girls that did make the high school roster. Guess who’s mom gave the best bj???

Broussard and Youngsville passed taxes to build theirs and now have huge surpluses

My ex wife's nephew graduated a few years ago but when he was a senior, he was a 6'5" PG for his high school team. They weren't doing so hot in their overall record but he was putting up 25 PPG and schools were interested. He was told by an AAU coach to quit and go play for him with guarantees of playing for a big school.
It was all a cash grab from these parents. I don't think he played much and the biggest school any of them went to was LSUE.

Did they finish paying off their initial bond issue, or are they utilizing the extra revenue to build more facilities?
Terrebonne too has a tax. I think it is 1-3% hotel/motel tax for the Bayou Country Sports Complex, but Ida and COVID to a certain extent decimated the local hotel inventory. COVID did help with occupancy since some offshore companies used hotels as quarantine/isolation centers before sending workers offshore.

I fricking hate travel ball. Populated by narcissist parents who are stupid. And god forbid you have to work on a team with one of these losers. They don’t do shite because there are always at a tournament or practice.
Employers need to stop hiring these idiots. HUGE red flag.

Travel ball is to make cities that host games, coaches , businesses that run them , and large sport venues , hotels, and restaurants a lot of money. It also makes High School coaches money that is kicked backed to many for pushing their players to play.
It absolutely has nothing to do about the kids.
My wife’s a financial advisor and has had many clients whose kids played travel baseball, volley, and lacrosse. None of their children earned a scholarship and each spent on average $40,000 over the life of the child and could have saved that money for college.
She had one gentleman admit that he spent $80,000 on volleyball and what a huge mistake that was.
And yes you shouldn’t be allowed to play rec ball and travel at the same time. Causes enormous problems for coaches and teams.

Totally agree. Everybody wants their kid to be the next Bregmam or even Burrow, but it's a very slim chance. I've seen parents spend every waking moment outside of work going around the state or even the country, to their kids' sports events. Most kids aren't in that top 1%. They graduate, go to college, have to find a job. And the two parents are left looking at each other asking "who the heck are you?" Their sole attention and energy over years were spent on their kids instead of each other.

I'm just glad that the kids are active in sports and not sitting in front of the TV.

Not sure about Broussard but Youngsville is paid off and expanding

Travel ball is watered down and is what Rec ball was 25yrs ago. The rec parks are filled with broken homes and kids whose parents are just looking for a babysitter.
Travel ball or sports in general if used correctly can teach kids a lot about life (hard work, teamwork, conflict resolution, grit)
As for making it to the bigs or even making D1 you either have it or you don’t, seen countless kids who were studs all through travel ball and were “committed” to d1 as sophomore or Jr in high school and now work construction.
Now if you want to see some wasted money go check out showcasing and collegiate camps.

My son plays football and baseball at the local rec district. There used to be at least 4 baseball teams at the district for his age group. As soon they got to kid pitch age, half the kids in his age group left for travel ball teams. Once a few left, the other parents wanted their kids to go to travel ball too. So it’s definitely about the parents.
My son just likes to be on a team and have fun. So he’ll keep playing at rec for as long as he wants to.
It’s funny though, he goes to different summer camps for sailing, outdoor skills, kayaking, etc. And those camps are full of kids that do more than just play baseball. His friends that do travel ball spend all summer at nothing but baseball camps. I’m sure they’ll all go pro.
