Discrimination against fat people is so endemic, most don’t even realise it’s happening

Here are some examples of microaggressions. By identifying these microaggressions, maybe you can be more socially conscience and help end discrimination against fat folks.

When we think of prejudice and discrimination, most of us tend to think of overt attacks, harassment, or discriminatory behaviour. Blatant examples of prejudice do still occur with depressing frequency, but for most members of stigmatised groups, it is not these experiences that shape their daily lives. Rather, belonging to a socially stigmatised group means travelling through a world that is rife with multiple small, sometimes subtle or apparently inconsequential reminders of your devalued status, known as microaggressions.

Microaggressions against fat people are so pervasive and normalised in modern society that people, even fat people, may not recognise them as stigmatising at all. The sometimes ambiguous nature of microaggressions means that the target may be unsure of the intent or underlying meaning, wondering if that person was actually stigmatising them or not, making it difficult to respond. What is more, fat stigma is so entrenched that many fat people are complicit in their own stigmatisation, believing that they deserve it, or that the perpetrator was just stating a fact (“fat people are ugly and disgusting”).

When they get on a bus and the person sitting next to an empty seat scowls at them or pointedly places their bag on the seat;
People watching them while they’re eating in a restaurant or checking out the contents of their trolley in the supermarket;
A fat joke on TV or in a film; A slimmer friend asking if she “looks fat in this”;
Hearing a group of children making fun of them;
Or even wondering whether they will be taken seriously when they go to the doctor with a sprained ankle, or just told to go away and lose some weight.

That's a shame. Maybe if they realized people were discriminating against them, they'd lose some weight

I much prefer to discriminate against fat people.
Eta: same with smokers

Every person I ever see driving is a dumb arse that can't drive.
Every person I ever encounter in public is in my fricking way and should go away.
If anyone tries to talk to me, they're a moron that needs to stop trying to be my friend.
At least I don't discriminate?

For the vast majority of people, being fat is a choice. I have no problem with people choosing that, but I also don’t feel sorry for them.

I don't want you sitting on half of me because you can't fit in the seat.

Translation: You might not realize that you are supposed to be offended, so we’re going to tell you why you should be offended.

Sound medical advice is a microaggression?

It doesn't bother me to say something directly to them in a non-confined place. Fat bastards aren't gonna chase me down.

Sorry you’re fat. You should probably stop riding scooters at the grocery and Disney. A few extra steps might do you some good

Being fat is an objectively unhealthy and destructive choice. There's a difference between being cruel and refusing to normalize or approve of obesity.

Give them a feather and tell them they can fly.

Fat people are gross and being fat is a choice

Well, this is just physics. How obvious is it that if your ankle is having to support more weight, it suffers more stresses? Same goes with blood pressure and diabetus.

Being fat is ALWAYS a choice. Due to certain medical conditions or debilities, some people have a harder time staying thin than others. Just like some people have a harder time avoiding alcoholism and drug abuse than others.
The bottom line is if you are fat and you either exercise more or eat less, you will lose weight. It's relative and some will need help via medication in certain instances (such as hypothyroidism) beyond a certain point, but everyone who is fat and says they don't want to be is either a liar or ignorant of the reasons behind their obesity.

We should discriminate against fat people. They're not only annoying in public places, they're also contributing to increasing healthcare costs for everyone.
I understand some people have more trouble losing weight than others but to say they CAN'T lose weight is simply untrue.
