I don’t agree with a lot that’s in this article but there is zero doubt that white flight out if the city is a primary cause.

You are such a shitty poster across all boards here.

Hell, even Benny Thompson ( Mississippi’s only Democrat Congressman) said he wouldn’t DARE sent Jackson a dime without a plan

It's funny you asked that. JJ: The Rest of Story: Jackson Finances

In this article it shreds the "white flight" theory. The administration wasn't collecting payments for the water usage. Hell, they tried to claim some state entities were not paying for water, with those entities coming back and explaining, they would be happy to pay if a bill were provided. All of the water issues can be traced back to lack of leadership and only being in office to enrich themselves

That article was amazing. Unreal.

So because one group of people moved to a different area, that means they’re responsible for the people that stayed not keeping the system properly maintained?

What I read today on Reddit is that white flight decimated the tax base necessary to maintain the water systems.

Which is basically those "on their side" far left idiots calling all southern blacks poor.

I lived in Jackson for years. I once went over a year and half without getting a single water bill.

Wow. I had no idea the city’s management was so inept that they weren’t even billing customers. It’s no wonder the system failed. Not billing customers = no revenue = no money to maintain infrastructure.

On the other hand, it’s pretty genius. How can people complain about no water if they aren’t paying for it? I guess they are getting what they paid (or didn’t pay) for. Of course the Jackson politicians want someone else to bail them out of the consequences of their ineptitude.

Now was that flight the result of just racism or people fleeing a terrible school district, a corrupt and terrible city government, rising crime etc. Basically moving to the burbs to have better quality of life.

How is having control and freaking it up institutional racism. It’s like they - blacks and/or white liberal guilters - don’t realize they are saying blacks can’t run or fund cities or school districts without the money and active volunteering of white people.

quote:

Jackson’s water system — which serves a population that is more than 80 percent Black — has been burdened with problems for many years, largely because white flight drained the city of resources.

The city’s resources were white people??? I thought white people were the problem for blacks.

quote:

In 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency issued an emergency order warning that the water system in Jackson posed "an imminent and substantial endangerment" to residents and could contain dangerous contaminants such as E. coli. Four years earlier, state health officials alerted the city about elevated levels of lead in its drinking water.

What did the city do? What did its black residents vote for?

quote:

Jackson is now nearly 83 percent Black, up from 47 percent Black in 1980, and roughly a quarter of its residents are below the poverty line.

In 1980 blacks made up 47% of the city. Did Democrats just use them for their vote in 1980? Regardless they have been the majority for decades and 70% to 83% for a long time as well. All covering the time this problem was ignored. Also, 25% below poverty line still means 75% are above it. The county is almost 70% black. Jackson is black owned and operated. Sometimes you have to make the choice between having Chargers & other bling bling or having safe drinking water.

This is hilariously stupid

It is, but it it hilariously believed by the people that stayed as the primary reason.

My neighbors have an old water meter that reads in cubic feet, absolutely sure the meter reader has no clue so they are always paying a fraction of their actual water use.

I seriously have looked for a meter like that I can swap mine out with, with how corrupt and incompetent the local water utility is it would probably be long after I'm gone before they figure it out...

So if evil whitey leaves a place it's racist but if evil whitey moves into a place that's gentrification which is also racist.

Also, Jackson has had a Democrat mayor for over 120 years straight.

One of the articles I read today actually listed this as a problem with the meters, as if there was no way known by man to convert between the two.

So an almost entirely black city run by black people can't function properly and it's white people's fault?

That was my take as well. White racist POS. Why did they have to leave that city

This sounds like youre saying "without white people the system doesn't work?"

Exactly. Do black people need white people for things to be funded and managed smoothly? Are they not capable of managing a city themselves and creating businesses in order to have a strong middle class and tax base? Are black parents not capable of being involved in their childrens lives and schools so they get a quality education and grow up successful rather than fall into criminal activity? Do they need white people to do these things for them?

Sounds racist to me

white flight

Why is “white flight” always treated as a problem with white people?

Access to white people is not a right. It is not an entitlement. It is not white people’s fault that when they're forced to flee their homes things fall apart.

Do people invoking "white flight" as an excuse for inner city disfunction really not realize what they're admitting?

I know multiple Jacksonians who don’t receive a water/garbage bill. They’ve called and get no where. These are people who don’t mind paying their bill.
Jackson didn’t keep a high school that all could attend like Neville in Monroe.
