re: Did your mom leave you in car to run in to store growing up?

Consider: back then we also left the house unlocked, the keys in the car, let the kids run the neighborhood all day and had parents that could think. Today, Karens may be needed if they will prevent a kid baking in a hot car because of a parent whacked on drugs or paying more attention to her phone than to her kid.

Am I not supposed to be doing this these days? They’re in more danger in a gas station in Louisiana than they are in a locked car.

Yep, but she also put me and my brothers in car seats like this:
We could almost reach the steering wheel. I was ready to drive by the age of 5 in terms of knowing how to navigate around town. It also looked easy.

All the time. In the hot summer she would roll down all the windows.

All the time and you better not go in store and page her arse or it was your arse.

My mom was a home health nurse (visiting nurse) and she would bring us around in her suburban while she made home visits, and leave us in the truck.
Yea, I’ll leave my kids locked in the car w/ AC blasting to run into gas station real quick; they are in eye shot.
It’s perfectly legal, I dare a Karen to frick with me.

Obviously this didnt happen in the summer when it was hot. And it didnt happen when I was very young
Sixties kids were left in the car all year round with the windows down. In fact you could have a trivial conversation with strangers in the car next to you at the stop light and believe it or not that happened more than you think.

Yes. And my dad left us to run into the bar and get a go cup.

If I was with mom, I would usually stay in the car and listen to the radio. When I was with my dad, I usually would go wherever he went because it was usually interesting.
The one time I am thankful I stayed in the car was when dad had to run into his office at the Cordell Hull building in Nashville which was across the street from Municipal Auditorium.
Dad was taking a while, I got bored. Looked across the street and saw a big bus. Got curious, walked over to the bus and a very young me met Nancy Wilson of Heart.

My mom would just leave the car running if I remember right. Idk, the difference was that I was equally responsible for figuring the situation out. Now kids aren’t allowed to come up with solutions and make basic survival decisions.

I feel like I spent half my childhood in the back seat of my mom's car while she grocery shopped, went to Goudchaux's on Main Street, J C Penny's in Delmont Village, etc . (Baton Rouge store locations, for youngsters and those not familiar with 60's & early 70's BR)

All of us kids stayed in the back of Dad's pickup where we sat to ride.

NEVER!!! My mother couldn't drive.

Yep, the one that stands out is at a gas station in the hood. About 6 years old and I noticed a "box" on the side of the store with the lid open, got out of the car and walked to the side of the store and pushed the lid closed. the electrical box then arced and blew me off my feet and burned a hole in my palm. I can imagine the terror and confusion in my mother's head when I ran into the store screaming and holding my charred black hand.
She must have been thinking "WTF!? I can't leave you alone for 2 mins?"

It was not unusual for my mom to leave me and my 2 younger sisters in the car when she would run into Puglia's on St. Claude and Caffin Ave. when we were kids.
Different times for sure and a lot less perceived danger in doing that compared to what is going on today with helicopter parenting being the norm and people calling the law as soon as they see kids or a pet in a car that is in a parking lot.

shite, my dad would leave us in the car for over an hour sometimes
We'd wonder if he forgot about us
At least you knew the strip club had to close eventually.

Dad left me in the car while he went in for 5 minutes to see friends at the bar. 3 hours later I’m driving the pickup home at 13 years old while he’s shitfaced and listening to country music and cracking jokes
