I lived and worked around Indian Villages for years.
Some of their settlements looked like garbage dumps...

I’m an old fricker and have never littered. I have stopped when I have seen people littering and compelled them to pick it up. They were given the choice to do so instead of escalating things. Frick litterers.

The least effective PSA was the one that warned of the danger of blasting caps. 13 year old me was thus alerted to their existence and scoured construction areas in search of one.

The “don’t crawl in an old refrigerator and suffocate” one was pretty effective. People started taking the doors off before they dumped them on a dead end road.

Friend,

The Earth is God’s and only by God’s command do we nurture it. Therefore, conservation and protection of God’s good gift to us is necessary. We do not litter nor do we run our AC or heater to a degree more than delta ten with the outside temperature. We also make a point to tell our waiter not to bring us straws, do not purchase bottled water, and try to eliminate as much non-biodegradable material as is possible. Mother’s vehicle is very energy efficient and we drive within posted speed limits.

The use of unnecessary plastic products is as bad as littering in my opinion. I find it ironic that in a place where littering is condemned as “trashy” that some of the same people condemning littering are the same who mock conservation efforts. Conservation of the Earth’s resources by such methods as renewable energy is more important than eliminating roadside litter.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Looking back on the early 70s I think the don't litter ads struck home with kids and they pressured their parents.

Something worked. I have a lot of nostalgia about growing up in the 70's but it was nothing to see people throwing shite out of a car window back then.

I don't litter because my dad caught me doing it once and made me get out and go pick up trash on the side of the road while he sat on the tailgate and watched me

I pretty much did the same thing to my kids too

May be y'all remember this jingle from tv commercial 70's

went something like this:

"As I go wandering where others do not roam
& as I go I like to throw things I don't want to take home
plastic cups, paper bags, trashy shoes
there's tons & tons to lose
banana peels, broken wheels
I don't need none of that
Louisiana are we singing the right song"

PSA’s really do work. I remember when I was in high school back in 2006, everyone used to use the word “gay”. I remember a PSA came out with Grant Hill and other athletes/famous people saying how saying “that’s gay” isn’t cool.

Soon after that came out, I remember a girl at school admonishing some guy for saying “that’s so gay”. And from then on it became increasingly more common for people to shame others for using the word “gay” in that way. I was like wow, PSA’s really do work, because before it was on TV nobody ever thought anything of it.

Sad Chief had zero impact on my littering.

Nancy Reagan had zero impact on my using street drugs.

Didn't do these because my parents raised me right.
