No and no. Central AC unit went it when I was probably 5 and we couldn't afford to replace it. Never had any AC again while living at home.

Yes and yes.

I don’t know anyone who grew up in the 70’s/80’s in New Orleans without AC in their home. You’d have to be dirt poor. Hell, even the dirt poor have AC.

The first thing I do when buying a car is test the AC. If the AC isn’t strong, it’s a dealbreaker.

House did. First vehicle did not.

I had 280 air in my first truck. 2 windows down driving 80 mph. That was the A/C.

House was a 4 br Woodhouse with an attic fan. It did a pretty decent job, we had 20" fans in every room also. Our cars had a/c. My first car definitely did, I'm a/c spoiled.

How did we survive?

My Grandmother, who was a child during the depression, told me that at night they would soak their bedsheets in water, ring them out and put them on the bed.

She said it made trying to sleep a little more tolerable during the summers.

I think all of our parents are from the generation/region that likes to get together and debate who grew up the poorest. It leads to some tall tales. There wasn’t a whole lot of excess in rural Arkansas, Louisiana etc in the 1950s/60s.

Born and lived in Alaska for 1.5 years. Fought we had A/C.

House in BR was my great grandparents house that my parents remodeled. They added A/C when remodeling.

Not 100% sure in car A/C. Want to say my dads car no but moms yes.

I lived in Nicaragua where it was 85-90 degrees every day with no AC and I got used to it. That was a coastal region though so you got decent air flow. Living in the Deep South with no AC just seems like hell on earth. I’d have checked out Indiana or Ohio.

I don't remember ever being without A/C.
In one house it was a large window unit and it kept things cool.

Later my parents built a house with central A/C and it was much better.

We're soft.

The Deep South was still pretty damn poor up to about the early 80s

If a poster is 40-50 it’s highly likely his parents grew up poor. My grandfather grew up in Missouri in a one room house with a dirt floor. My dad was never poor because that same grandfather became a doctor

We went on our honeymoon to St Croix and hardly no home or business has AC there except the main tourist places

First home had 2 window units, so we congregated in those rooms.

My first new car did not have a/c and was a standard.
