college i was existing on emergency loans. i.e. pay it off by end of the semester. i couldn't afford to not work 40 hours a week and go to school and eat. was in between places to sleep for a while.
first couple of years of marriage if i had missed a paycheck we'd have been screwed. we also got a subprime mortgage (21 year olds getting a 9% loan with almost 0 credit) but never missed a payment.
when i changed jobs and moved i had to go a couple months without a paycheck and ran up some credit card debt that crippled me. that was all clear by 30 though.
all good now. could be unemployed for 5-6 months and be fine at this point.

Yes. My first job out of college I made less than 25k, and had to work two jobs for a solid 6 months because my car exploded. I really, really messed up in college.

Yes. Put myself thru college at LSU and grad school. I got out of it with a job after grad school. I had a stipend for grad school that I was able to stretch pretty good; not as bad as my LSU days.

Once, back in the early 80's. Had hust moved to BR, West Lakeview Dr / Oak Hills Place, shared a house w a few others. I was about 20, moved to finish school at LSU.
I had transferred in to sell computers at Tandy Biz Products on Florida Blvd and had little income before establishing myself and commissions started kicking in. Had to live off PBnJ's and potatoes for a couple of weeks. But I paid my rent. Too proud to ask my parents for money.
But then my sales went up and i was balling it out in BTR until I graduated. Never looked back...when I got cash out of the ATM from that point on, never looked at the balance.
Now I do all the fin planning...it's about what can we buy this month or vacations can we plan with our extra $ while still saving for retirement.

When I bought my first house.. I had about $400 left over monthly to pay for groceries, gas for the car and social.. Then I get a letter from the new mortgage company (loan was sold) that the closing company had made an error in calculations in my monthly note... My new monthly note was $70 higher... Things got a little tight... About a year later I got a promotion and things were a whole better.

’m sure a lot of you may have experienced this at some point, but how many of you had a time where you lived paycheck to paycheck?
I was 22-23 right out of college working my first real job that I was enjoying. Best time of my life.

No, I've been very fortunate in my life. I don't have a lot of extra; but I've never been concerned about paying my bills.
I thank the Lord every day for this. I lived with it while at home. My Dad was a good man; just not very good with his finances.

My first year or two of marriage was paycheck to paycheck. I was a young LCpl and then Cpl in the Marines while my wife was still a student and worked part time at a sandwich shop. Our weekends would be centered around doing free things, like the beach, seeing family who would pay for meals, etc. Our Friday "date nights" would consist of going to Little Ceasar's or a grocery store for their $10 chicken deal and getting a movie from Redbox. It sucked, but it pushed us to do better so we could afford to do things like travel. We got out of it by making more money and not making stupid financial decisions.

Of course
Best advice ever given to me was pay your vehicle off and don't carry a CC balance if at all possible, and you'll be fine.

In college. After I graduated, I set up a budget and started saving money.
