In Bossier, the Italians ran the convenience stores and liquor stores. They operated as they pleased, no one interfered.
They would sometimes charge more if you were obviously underage.

legal age in the 60's was 4 foot ten inches......................tall enough to put your money on the counter

My buddy and I didn't drink in the building itself but we regularly skipped class or study hall and drank in his car in the parking lot, then returned to school. How we never got busted I will never understand. It was usually 40's of malt liquor as it was cheap and readily available.

Yep, and we bought it when a friend would work the late shift at a mom and pop grocery store. He'd text us when the owner would leave for a bit and we would haul arse to get there so we could buy whatever we could afford. The camera at the register was blurry so you couldn't make out who the customer was. We would hand over our licenses making it seem like we were of legal drinking age.

This! I was 14 as well when I first started going to TJ's, Bruno's, The Boot, Tuck's, AT II's etc.
It was not uncommon to see our teachers out and do shots with them. My parent's even knew what me and all of my classmates were up to. All they'd ever tell me was that I could call them any time of the night.
14yr olds nowadays aren't even allowed to walk around the block by themselves

I actually didn’t until very late, like senior year and summer after.
Smoked a good bit of weed though. Funny because I dislike it as an adult.

Buddy and I did the same thing a few times a day, except to smoke weed. This was practically every day, in a parking lot regularly patrolled by the school security guard. Also amazed we never got busted.
