They're made for running. Nobody needs that kind of stack just walking around.

Truth.
I used them for my last few marathons and they are great.
I would never wear them as regular shoes though.

Pretty sure that new balance shoe was around before hokas

IMO the most comfortable shoes are Sperry Topsiders with minimal soles.
When they get really worn you are correct. If you want a sneaker with minimal soles almost every brand has a model or two of retro-runner or remakes of vintage track shoes. My favorite around the house sneaker is the Saucony Bullet. They have a very thin sole, very light and when they are completely broken in you hardly notice they are on. They are a copy of a vintage track shoes without the spikes.

They started as a pretty niche brand meant for ultra trail running that was the opposite of the minimalist movement of the late 00s
This is the right answer. When I started running the trend was to wear Vibrams or Huaraches, born to run was the hot topic. Some time during my running career, maximalist cushioning became the trend, supplemented now by carbon plates.

Weak ankles. Should have played sports to build strength and balance.

Until you check their knuckles, then realize it’s probably best to steer clear of them.

I see all the short kings at the gym wearing these

This. No one should be walking around in them, they are pointless for that.

BiL wears them as a nurse. That makes sense. But no, these are distance running shoes.

It’s sweet that you’re accepting of him and your brothers relationship

Yeah, I see Hokas in hospitals and medical offices a lot.

I bought some Newton's a couple of weeks ago, and I love them.

i had these about 8 years ago and they were the greatest running shoe i ever had. put almost 800 miles on them before the cushion wore out.
i'm sure hoka was out around then.

I'll never understand the high stack height shoes. The further your foot is from the ground, the more unstable you become leading to possible injury. For walking or base effort running, a minimal shoe is the way to go. Only wear a shoe with a drop and stack height when racing on the street.

I have the Gaviotas on right now. Walked 35,000 steps in disney one day on them and feet never hurt. Like walking on a pillow
