Two New Orleans real estate developers have an ambitious plan to create a new outdoor-focused entertainment district with restaurants, bars and other amenities on the banks of the Mississippi River near Audubon Park. The project, which is still in its early stages, is being called "The Batture" by developers Ben Jacobson and Casey Burka, who completed their purchase Wednesday of the 10-acre tract located on the river side of the levees between The Fly and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headquarters.
quote:

The initial concept, according to Jacobson, is to create a corridor with eight buildings that would be used as restaurants and bars. The land would be carved into five city “blocks” separated by pedestrian walkways. A street lined with 400 parking spaces would span the length of the district and run parallel to Leake Avenue, while the land nearest the river would be reserved for a large lawn sloping down to the water.

Hope they wait until Teedy gone. She would have her grubby little fingers all up in that project.

the bigger issue will be excavating the area during construction. the water table is very high alongside the river like that.

they'll have engineers to deal with that.
we just finished a new building at waterford 3 and had to de-water the entire site for two weeks just so we could dig an 8' deep hole for a lift station

Looks like they know what they're doing. Best of luck, guys.

Anywhere with entertainment people are allowed to congregate for free will never work in areas with nearby poverty, crime, and low income housing. All of these type ventures in Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans have been complete disasters.

Yeah pretty much. It is nice that someone has an idea to utilize waterfront space. Not sure what they could do with Lake P but it's underutilized as well.

I’ve been waiting for someone other than the Corps of Engineers to come along and build a building on the Mississippi river levee.

Every time I pass that COE building, it pisses me off to the core. It’s a giant frick you right there in the middle of forbidden land yelling “do as I say, not as I do!!!”

i sort of agree. i think that area is pretty underutilized. You can get in and out of that area without going through too much bullshite.

New Orleans needs more entertainment developments which include access to the river. This could be great and I would go to restaurants and concerts there. I am waiting though for Uptown NIMBYs to weigh in about concerns over parking and traffic. Legitimate concerns that I might have if I lived in that area, but IMO not sufficient to kill the project. Hopefully they are able to work with the neighborhood. 400 parking spaces is a good start.
