Because the earth is a sphere and not flat.

IIRC Bob Breck got lucky once with a snowstorm or something and ever since then he believed he was God's gift to meteorology.

A knot is 1 nautical mile per hour.
A nautical mile is 1 minute or latitude.
A nautical mile is 1 minute or latitude.

Jackson is plenty. Jackson even had power after Katrina. Now, just south of Jackson didn't, but the city did.
Surprising cause we had power out for a week in Greenwood, ms from Katrina. I was in school at the time and didn’t have class all week due to no power. It wasn’t widespread, just some trees on power lines but nobody around to fix it quickly cause all resources went south to help

It's to compensate for the fact that you are measuring a sphere (the earth is roughly round) instead of a flat plane.

A knot is one nautical mile per hour. An nmi is one minute of latitude

Starting to see a trend in the models of this going N longer after the turn as opposed to the big curve E. Any one of you experts seeing the same? If so, why do you think this is happening? TIA.

Because the NHC, NWS, and the met field as a whole still places an abundance of emphasis on shipping. When you think about it, the vast majority of a Tropical Cyclone's life is spent over open water, and the only human interests impacted still solely use Knots.

As I understand, that was the historic purpose, but then they standardized it to a set length (not unlike a mile, just slightly longer) such that this rationale doesn't really exist anymore. No?
