NWS forecast still shows max 46mph gusts based on the 10am forecast in BR.

True, but NHC also saying 15% chance of sustained hurricane winds in Baton Rouge.

For reference, they've got Lafayette at 28% and Lake Charles at 29%.

Gustav was so strong it make the Mississippi flow the wrong direction

That is a lot more common than most realize.

The Atchafalaya was flowing upriver for Laura

meh. I was in a giant house sitting on the porch because the wind was blowing over the top of the house. We drank beer and watched oak trees snap and uproot

Almost exact same here. It was really relaxing until a tree came smashing down into our pool and about 6 feet from sending limbs into the house. Then it was a whole lot of "oh shite"

You don't seem to understand there's more things that factor into the impact of a storm than just how strong the winds are. Gustav hit BR at a bad time where the ground was extremely saturated. It dumped a ton of trees all over due to that reason with whatever tornadoes it fired off. It seemed like a storm worse than it was because it came in at a bad time.

not really, but its hard to catch fish when going into the details like that

Is there a site to get guidance on what Halloween decorations need to be taken down for differing wind speed events? Right now I'm thinking take down the blowups but leave out the scarecrow and giant spider.

I was told BR was “fricked” and were going to get pounded and this storm was worse than Gustav for the city.

FWIW, Steve Cap just tweeted this for comparison. This is based on his forecast for BR.

That's actually the best point anyone has made to counter my argument.

Well the 4am update from today had 80mph gusts in BR so a shift East and it’s Gustav 2.0.

If anything, it tells me that people need to take hurricanes seriously if 12 years after some 60 mph sustained wind has this much effect. People may not want to admit that they'd be terrified of going through a cat 1 or cat 2, but once they've been through 60+ for a few hours, they'll understand.

Going through Gustav wasn't scary. I sat on my back porch and watched most of it. It's the 2 weeks of no power after that sucked hard.

A friend just told me it's now headed towards Lake Charles. Is that true? If so, those poor poor poor people man. These people don't deserve 2 hurricanes in a row hitting them. This year needs to end already.

You are a Weather Hero and we are all in awe. Personally, I've never commented on Gustav but I do recall spending three days solid dealing with my own property cleanup, closed roadways in my neighborhood, two weeks without a paycheck, and ten days with no electricity. I've also survived a direct hit by a fatal F4 tornado. If it's ok with you, I'd rather skip both.

Anything but a weather hero....thats my point. 100 pages back all of these guys called slack an idiot when he said less than 50 people on here have experienced true hurricane force winds.

Yet the BR bros swear Gustav was the worst storm ever. It was bad, but it was only tropical storm force winds, true cat 2 hurricane force winds would have the BR bros crying.

Gustav was a bad arse storm....but not really to yall in BR

You are ignorant and talking out of your arse and it is showing. I have been through many bad storms in my 56 years of living everywhere from Thibodaux (Betsy) , to NOLA (Camille) to BR (Andrew, Gustov) ... Gustov was definitely a rough one. You are very wrong.

So what can be realistically expected in the Cenla area? Laura did a pretty good number on us up here after it got finished battering the poor people in SWLA. Lots of damage done up here, particularly with downed trees and a lot of electrical infrastructure damaged.

The walls creaking and the windows flexing is an unsettling experience for sure. Not to mention the older people in the room saying the rosary while everyone is huddled in an interior room. I do like the glow from a hurricane lamp though.

Been through it my man. The big ones sound like the train whistle being blown outside your house with the doors being sucked out, the windows flexing...I don’t recommend it.
