You think? Had no idea they opened up that fast after hurricane.

Agreed. The amount of trees down in Gustav was pretty unbelievable. Am I wrong in saying that there was some sort of tropical weather event right before Gustav? It seems like the ground was really saturated which was a problem when the wind came through.

Truth. Look how many people died using them after Laura.

As mentioned a few times in this thread, the maximum sustained winds in BR were like 61 MPH.
I have a suspicion the airport north of Baton Rouge experienced weaker winds than people in south Baton Rouge, Ascension, and Iberville Parish. The wind gusted to 91 at the airport. It’s almost a certainty it was 100+ south of there. Gustav is arguably the hardest a hurricane has ever hit Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge is pretty far inland. It’s not like BR has been smacked by many hurricanes in its history.
I figure people are confusing Gustav’s forward motion with Isaac’s which made landfall around the same location in 2012 and moved very slowly. But had minimal impacts in Baton Rouge.

Good memory. Tropical Storm Fay came through one week before Gustav

The flooding and trees down I saw around campus after Gustav tells the story. Ground was already saturated a bit. The beer and coffee call beignets were an interesting combo before the app state game, though.

I agree wholeheartedly that Gustav was rough for BR on a relative basis. It's that experience that causes people to unintentionally embellish the facts about the storm. No different than people on the Outdoor Board that swear they've been fishing in 5-7 ft waves.
ETA - Also, BR got some of the worst winds in Gustav. BR had higher sustained winds than Galliano, Thibodaux, and almost any other land based observation site in LA.

People in BR talk about Gustav, IMO, because there was a lot of other wind activity spun off from the storm. In the Dales by the Perkins Road Overpass area, it was said a microburst or something similar was responsible for clearing out so many trees. Gustav did much more damage than anyone would have expected given its size.

Sorry, Chicken couldn’t find a generator. The prize has been changed to a weather seminar hosted by PeeJ

BR had 90 plus mph winds for Betsy.

And both HWRF and HMON drop it to 938 on approach. Weakening doesn't start until just before landfall.

Gustav was easily the worst hurricane I can recall in BR. Katrina and Rita were really nothing here from purely a weather standpoint. I don't recall Andrew being that bad either. Not a ton of rain at least.
Yeah Gustav was the worst TS for BR in my 40 years.
Obviously the 2016 flood was the worst by far of any weather system
