Absolutely horrid customer service.
Delta was right in that the kid couldn't have the seat, but the failed to explain the actual reason and the dumb flight attendant threaten that parents with jail and foster care for their kid. And then she got all uppity and told them they all had to leave rather than letting the infant sit in one of the parent's laps.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A Southern California family says they were kicked off an overbooked Delta airplane because they refused to yield a seat held by their young son.
The Schear family of Huntington Beach says they were flying from Hawaii to Los Angeles last week when airline staff asked them to give up a seat occupied by their 2-year-old son and carry him on their laps for the duration of the flight.
They tried to refuse and argued with airline staff, but say they were threatened with being sent to jail.
"You have to give up the seat or you're going to jail, your wife is going to jail and they'll take your kids from you," Brian Schear recalled the airline staff telling him.
Despite feeling they were in the right, that threat was terrifying, said Brian's wife, Brittany Schear.
"As a mother, you have a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old - it doesn't matter whether that's true or false. It put fear in me," she said.
They filmed the encounter with airport staff and posted it on YouTube.

Why? They bought the seat.
The parents aren't suing or anything. They had to get off and pay $2,000 for a different flight. Total bullshite.

You cant switch around like that
The parents were wrong

because they bought the seat for another child and rather than pay the fees associated with changing the name on the reservation he just let his other child sit in the seat. I guess it is FAA regulation that the name on the reservation must sit in that seat.
She was doing her job, but it could have been handled much, much better.
A good employee/attendant would have asked the father to come to the front of the plane, explained she thinks the rule is silly, escorted him to the desk and changed the name free of charge (if possible at that point).
Some people just can't see the forest for the trees.

This is true, but why not just say that's the baby's name? It isn't like babies have photo ID

For sure. Telling someone their kid is going to foster care is guaranteed to fuel the fire more. What an idiot.

What flying is now...

As someone who is sitting in DFW right now, I have no sympathy or faith in the human race.

Because the seat they bought was for another one of their kids who they got on an earlier flight. The names didn't match.
Which is a fine rule I guess, but Delta failed miserably in explaining that.
You'd think airlines would be telling their people to do a little bit better with recent events.

They'll get a nice little settlement from Delta and be on their way.

This thread should be fun. Delta is held in such high regards on this board for whatever ignorant reasons.

In all honesty if I had a kid I would want to have them in a car seat on a plane, especially if I bought said seat.
It's not right for an airline to dictate how a kid flies, much less try and boot them off. I have a hard time believing there weren't other passengers on the flight that could have been bought off. Why go after a family?

Because the ticket/seat purchased was under a different kid's name (older child took a different flight home), and they didn't transfer it to the younger kid's name.
quote:
Schear says he originally bought the seat for his 18-year-old son Mason, but then decided to send him home on an earlier flight so that he could use the seat for his younger child, Grayson, who was placed in a car seat.
The airline staff tells him they need the seat because the flight is overbooked and the original passenger whose name was on the seat isn't using it.
But this is bullshite:
quote:
One airline employee tells him that under FAA regulations, 2-year-old children are not supposed to have their own seats at all and are supposed to sit in parents' laps for the duration of the flight.
"With him being two, he cannot sit in the car seat," one airline employee tells him. "He has to sit in your arms the whole time."
Yes, the kid CAN sit in a carseat if the ticket purchased is in his name.

They explained this to the employees at the gate and they said it was fine and let them board anyway.
Then once they were seated, came on and told them it was no longer fine.
Again...its a dumb fricking rule. They bought it, why can't they just change the name on it instead of kicking them out of the seat?

It's almost like you didn't watch the video. The delta employee clearly states that since his son isn't there then the seat was not the fathers to give to someone else. The dad thinks just because he paid for the seat he can put any person in it he wants. That is not how it works.
That said, there were two other dumbass things presented in the video: the delta employee talking about him losing their kids... And a grown arse man wearing a fricking flatbill cap - he loses his argument just on that fact alone.

The father even gave up towards then end and said they'd have the kid in their laps, but the FA decided to be vindictive.
