"When confronted with something unexpected, he would panic and start pushing the wrong buttons."
Previous airline employer confirmed:
"When faced with an unexpected event, he would start pressing random buttons in order to feel like he was doing something."
He should have been permanently banned from flying any aircraft.

That slow and agonizing realization before the crash must have been excruciating. Just the panic setting in is horrifying.

Same here. I thought about that crash often as I was flying a lot through Europe when it happened. It had to be terrible for the passengers as they would have known what was happening.
