Damn. Transmission went out on suv today.

Of course shop wants $2,800 although this one does great work. My shadetree has same vehicle. replaced his own. Wants to get one out of a junkyard. Would save at least a grand.

My wife’s went out on her 2011 Outback last week.
CVT is crazy expensive to repair or replace.
Estimate is $2500 to repair...$6000 to replace with new...$4000 to replace with used

How much is the SUV worth?

Go to LKQ, they have remanufactured transmissions and clutches that they rebuild in-house for like half the price you would pay for an aftermarket at a dealer or parts store. They're usually like new.
Definitely don't go OEM or the dealer's shop. Most shadetree mechanics are more than capable of a simple trans replacement, especially on an older vehicle. Would take it to one of them or a specialized transmission shop, just buy the trans yourself or there will be markup.

Junkyards are full of perfectly working transmissions for most any make or model of vehicle and you can get a warranty. OP if you have a LKQ salvage yard give them a call.
I dont know this posters issue with junkyards. Just because the vehicle is in a junkyard it's not all junk parts.

We have an Outback with a CVT. With those options, I'd repair, then sell.
Between the transmission issues and the oil consumption, I don't think I'll ever buy a Subaru again.

Definitely. There are a lot of totaled vehicles in junkyards with very few miles on them.

Shop around for better deals. I was able to pick up a tranny in San Francisco for 20 bucks one time.
