Houston is a larger city for one, so there was a little less sprawl over time. Both metros are in the top 5 in population.
San Antonio has a large city limit area and is still the 3rd largest metro in Texas.

Dallas metro, for whatever reason, was ahead of the curve building GHW Bush loop and similar infrastructure and the arterial feeders connected to it. (ETA: including the tollway extension.)
I remember going to visit family in Richardson in the early 90's (ish) and seeing them building these 5 story interchanges in the middle of empty farmland, and thinking "wtf?" My only LA experience to compare it to was the Miss River bridge we built that didn't have approaches for years.
Within a decade, it was 100% built up. It was like seeing that "perfect" sim city layout take off, irl.

Houston is a larger city
This seems to be the consensus. Greed of the city prevents surrounding areas from becoming their own municipality. Strange that people just sit there and take it. Especially with democrats running the city government and crime continuing to climb.

Dallas really has unlimited land to expand and grow
You need to stop at Grayson County. Don't cross the river and stop going toward Fannin County.
Those of us along the Red want nothing to do with the North Dallas McMansions on postage stamp lots.

San Antonio ?? has no water and some demographic problems
Houston has demographic problems that Dallas has no idea of.

I don't doubt there's a measurable difference, but South & SW Dallas exist. (Not sure what the proper area names are.)
ETA: Dallas having things divided into more, smaller municipalities probably helps here.

I'd probably rather live in Houston than Dallas these days, and would rather live in San Antonio than either.

I, too, would rank Dallas #3 on that list.

I was told the Woodlands sends a check to Harris County to be left alone. Guess those ballers don’t mind paying that way.

quote:It's mostly because of DFW Airport. My company is headquartered in Irving for that sole reason. You can get to any major, mid major, and even small metro markets in less than 4 hours from DFW.
Most non-tech corporate relocations pick DWF over Hou.
Simply because DWF has a slightly better climate and its central geography makes it easier to get to the rest of the country

Why have the Dallas suburbs exploded at a much faster rate than the Houston and San Antonio suburbs?
I’ll echo the land area thoughts, because Its not like SA or Houston growth has slowed up. SA metro has actually grown at a faster rate than DFW I believe.

Houston has no zoning and is a shithole.

The I-35 corridor northeast of San Antonio is the fastest growing region of he country (although that's more because of Austin than SA). The Far West side of San Antonio is growing like crazy too.

Isn't it simply that the City of Dallas itself is a much smaller municipality geographically than the other two?
Even Dallas County is about half the geographical size of Harris.
Most of the DFW growth is Collin, Denton, Tarrant, etc.

DFW has 2 major cities and both have suburbs so multiply by 2.

Yea… gonna need to see your data on this one. San Antonio is exploding. I think you’re just making up shite out of thin air.

Yes, you are free to have a crappy strip center with a taco truck in front of your neighborhood.
