It's obviously poorly worded but it's not wrong to say that our criminal justice system falls WAAAAY short of its goal of rehabilitating criminals.

It's a crime breeding ground.

I'm not so sure rehabilitation even works among the prison population anymore. Maybe for a few self motivated but that's a minscule part of the prison pop. Too many lucrative black markets out there

In short, fix the broken family problem caused by government "assistance" and unintended incentives to break families apart, and the education problem, caused largely by all of the broken families that produce kids with no support system to help them succeed in school.
Good luck with THAT when nearly half of the polity is invested and beholden to government assistance. Good luck with THAT when married couples are penalized by higher tax rates or taxes. Good luck when a good-sized segment of society does not wish to work over part-time in order to KEEP their government-assistance.

Plus, "who are you to legislate morality?" Notice how that works, and upon whom it is always thrown like an epithet? Plus all the usual rhetoric that emerges into the media air-space when ANYONE suggests cutting "assistance" and or having people earn it, or even suggesting that certain moral benchmarks should be applied because some empirical evidence shows that kids coming from intact families have a better time of it.

Yeah as we all know, being poor and uneducated literally forces you to become a violent criminal.

I know when I was poor with only my high school education, I just randomly mugged people against my will, and of course theirs. Only cure for it is more government money taken from productive people. Respect to the chief
Just could not stop. I was compelled just like you, the irresistible force of Nature being poor and uneducated, I had to mug and assault. Thank goodness for for those raise deserving teachers who saved countless lives and dollars by educating me!

So it's gone from boys being boys, thugs being thugs, to just plain old irresistible human nature through, obviously, DNA evolution over eons of human existence. We've just got to accept it. Jail the Special Olympians before they can unleash holy hell on John Q Public???

They need better programs.

Aimed at actually making these people hire-able.

I mean mandatory therapy sessions in prison, trade training, and slow integration into society via work release. Incentivize prisoners to be released earlier if they accomplish certifications in certain trades or get their GEDs, etc. and actively participate in therapy.

Something.

Because like I said, they're getting out one way or another. We need to make this work better for the people in society they're about to live amongst.

Obviously, this won't work for every prisoner. But if we improved recidivism by 20%, that would be a massive success and save tax payers a ton of money.

I agree with all of this.

If the point of prison is to rehabilitate, then we need to actually rehabilitate them. And then do our best to aid in a fruitful reintegration into society. Otherwise there isn’t much point and we should just string them up.

But the for profit prison system is a disgrace

From Granbury brah?

And who is surprised that someone who says this

quote:

“There are individuals in this city who have returned from prison who cannot find a job, who are not educated. In those instances those individuals are forced to commit violent acts.”

would come from this

Well, with the recent "decriminalization" of a variety of crimes and now this position from their top cop?

Yep, I dodged 20 bullets getting into my car this morning. Just let a few gentlemen into my house to steal their $750 worth for today. I even tipped them on the way out.

Yeah, they certainly aren't "forced" to commit violent acts.

But goddamn our country does a terrible job of actually trying to rehabilitate and reintegrate prisoners into our society.

A vast majority of them are getting out eventually. It is in EVERYONE'S best interest to improve that process. Cheaper on the tax payers, safer for society, etc.

Or we could just pay some third world country to take them off our hands.

I've only been living here a couple of months. I lived in Dallas/Addison for many years and Asheville, NC before I moved back to Dallas in 2015.

I got away from Dallas mainly because of the traffic - didn't worry too much about crime in Addison.

What you mean like burglars? People who think it’s ok to just take something that doesn’t belong to them? There’s something wrong with a person like that at their core.

Not necessarily.

You can't paint with that wide of a brush. Some of these people weren't taught right and wrong like we were. Some of them have no education or parenting. They aren't all evil humans. Your thinking here is one of the root causes of our ridiculous incarceration and justice system.

And its not just burglars, the non-violent drug offenders in jail are in the hundreds of thousands I believe.

That is insane if they won't prosecute under $750 in theft. That's not exactly a victimless crime. We should be increasing the penalty.
